Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I have 10 chicks growing. Got a really, really good deal on them. Gave sunnyskies some and I kept the rest. I really do like the variety in their color. And the crests remind me so much of Legbar hens.
HaHa, we got another one hooked!

Quote: chocolate is sex linked recessive... so if she's truly chocolate, then all cockerals have a 50/50 chance of throwing choco hens, but would require a choco hen to breed to to produce choco roos.

i don't believe it's normally found in sfh, so someone outcrossed somewhere to add it in.

The only other chocolate we have on the farm is a Runner duck, so it didn't happen here.

I believe both of the sources I got my eggs from that could have been her parents were pure - both direct from GFF. One of the pullets I have growing out also has the brown coloring, but more barring to it: (this one is not from my eggs)

So, if it is not truly chocolate, are there other colors that would appear chocolate? Or should I just call her brown?

The color of these birds isn't genetically Chocolate or even Dun, it's simply an expression of the wildtype gene commonly found in many breeds that are patterned.

Well heck! I don't care if we call it "chocolate," "wildtype," "red-over-black," "brown" or what! I love that hen and would love to have one like her some day! So many neat surprises with this breed. she does look like a mottled red dorking sort of... (ie wild type bbr)
this is Orangey... she's a bit lighter than typical, but still not far off. tho dorkings do tend to have more stippling than other breeds, so her feathers look more 'speckled' than the same color in other breeds (brown leghorn for one example).
