I'm glad you have such good company!
I can't wait for my eggs to hatch!!!
I received my 6 chicks from Greenfire a couple of days ago.
They are so sweet. Look to have blue, black, and a red color.
They are very healthy and running all around in the brooder.
I've been saying my pullet prayers! LOL

Hi. Your chicks weren't the only SF that GFF shipped to Texas this week! I got some too! I received a variety of colors but have mostly blacks and greys which is what I wanted. I told Jenny I preferred non crested but only time will tell how that turns out!

this week?
I also have a few eggs from Bulldogma and KYTinpusher in the bator.
I'm hoping I will get some pullets and a nice roo to keep and go forward
with.
Deltabluez Tess - I also prefer the non crested birds.
We also appear to both love herding border collies. I have had them a long time here
in Texas. I used to compete some in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, but now my dogs just help me
at home. One of my dogs likes to help me put up the chickens every night!

Wallis was kind enough to send me eggs from his non crested flock. But of course I know I could could still get some crested hatchlings.

Leigh, do any of your birds at Bulldogma have crests?

Turns out I am getting some eggs shipped this coming Sat from KYTinpusher! I also have 6 SF eggs from an ebay auction due to hatch later this week. Their birds were mostly non crested. OMG! lol I am going to have a BUNCH of SF on my place but my goal is to have enough to work with that I can be pretty picky in what I actually end up keeping..

I think you may have me confused with someone else. I had to go through my PMs to make sure I hadn't misled you somehow. My SFH all run together - crested and non-crested. For a while, I only had non-crested roos in my flock, but a few months ago added a roo with a small crest to add more diversity. I have been hatching mostly non-crested chicks here - only 1 out of 13 chicks in the last hatch were crested. If you want non-crested, I hope you have the same luck.

BTW - Wallis is a SHE and I generally go by Walli!

actually, crest is dominant, so if none of the parents are crested, it won't happen.

I thought same too but I asked Jenny at GFF about it very recently. SHE told me that she would get some crested from a non crested only breeding group. I asked her about what % and she said about 25%. I thought that was very odd. In such a case, the trait is behaving like a recessive gene. So, I don't know, I am just repeating what she told me. She said that maybe with SF being a landrace breed, the inheritance of their crests worked differently that what we were accustomed to with other breeds. Again, just telling what she told me.

it's also quite possible that the roo's crest is just very small... my crested roo looks nearly normal now that his comb's fully grown in.

though there may be some other gene involved that's inhibiting the expression of crest, but if so it's not one that's known or documented to my knowledge.

Yes, it occurred to me that what she had in her pen as "noncrested" might really be some birds with such a tiny crest that it appeared to be smooth. I have also wondered if there is such a thing as a "genetically crested" bird that does not exhibit the crest outwardly but they still would produce it. So it would be a crested "genotype" but a non crested "phenotype." Just some ideas
