Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I used to have a hatcher...but....alas. I washed it out and put it in the sun to dry and to kill germs. The flock of gangster roosters I had at the time came up on the deck, jumped on the table and pecked a hole in it. They did not survive the experience....they got butchered not long after that. Made me really mad.

I grabbed the camera and took these pics today.  We call him Sorin on the farm, and he's still fathering chicks.  A great personality, and he filled out well.

I went back through the thread, and this rooster is the sire of the red/white ones.

Randomly, I wonder if some of the OPs still have SFH....

I finally took some Amerucana hens out of quarantine, where I have had them for like 6 weeks, last night and added them to the SFH coop to help keep the guys happy. Peace reigns. All of them were up on the roosts huddled together tonight. No eggs except the lone RSL, but it's been cold and snowy, I penned them up, and it's dark here for well over 12 hours every day. I'm very happy with this bunch of SFHs.

Love that red "pyle" rooster; he looks alot like my Sheldor (cockerel.)

And here is a bit more eye candy. Pictures taken on Saturday during the brief moment of sunshine in the past week.

Helga, my dark SFH backlit then flashing her golden 'collar' in the sun; and Eld, the crested red mille cockerel.

Sunny -how many sfh do you have now?
10-12 or so. The coons took a bunch of pullets and a very nice little rooster this summer, before my LGDs arrived. Sigh. Have not lost a single bird to a predator since though. Then a couple died for unknown reasons; necropsies were nonremarkable and no disease agents were detected. But hoping 12 more hatch Jan 1!

You would think I'd be getting a dozen eggs a day now though...they are stubborn about wanting to be out running loose and it is so dark here these days. Last January, after the days started getting slightly longer, I had several hens begin laying unexpectedly...can only hope that happens again.

Quote: my own birds (all of the breeds I have) have started laying a bit here and there. i'm getting 2-5 eggs a day right now, including 1 sfh who's even laying in her own nest box (along with a blrw and dorking LOL) but i'm afraid if I pen her up again she'll stop all over. we'll see. I'm going to start keeping them in more often and see if I continue getting eggs. i'm only getting 1 sfh right now, and not every day, so i'm sure only 1 of my 3 are laying right now.

The OP definitely still has them; the thread was started by Greenfire Farms. My 4 crested pullets came from them this spring as chicks. I've also got two non-crested cockerels and one crested cockerel from the same shipment. I just can't say often enough how pleased I am with the disposition of the birds. My daughter loves spending time with our chickens and I couldn't be happier with how calm the Swedes are especially when she's running amok in the flock.
