Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Please tell me if these are swedish flower hens or Roos? I have to say they are the meanest birds I've ever kept and pick on everything! I would like to get rid of them
Hello Robgray,

Those are pretty cockerels, but may I ask where you got them from? The first picture you posted looks like a Swede to me but the picture above is a bit suspect to me I would love some other experienced SFH breeders to weigh in here. The coloring of the bird is quite beautiful, and if indeed is a full Swedish FH, then that is quite unique color. The thing that is a query to me is the young birds legs. From the picture I see on the birds left leg some distinct mottling of black and white dots. This is definitely not a Swedish trait and wonder if the breeder you got them from or their eggs from had a different breed that might have been mixed in with it? The legs also appear to be pink or flesh color at best, which is also not common in Swedish Flower Hens. ANy one else weigh in on this one? Both are very handsome looking young birds. though. I stand corrected if I am indeed wrong.

Swedish Orust Stunning aren't they? Do you see that chicks legs? Reminded me of these legs.
Truly! This site is dangerous. I do not need to add another breed to my list! Seriously!!! And I do see the spots on the little one but I'm no expert. I do have a full SFH from a breeder that I completely trust and her legs aren't totally yellow, but they're definitely not spotted. Is that normal? I never really questioned it due to the lack of breed standard but now you've got me thinking!

Please I am not an expert either. Flesh colored legs are also within correct color for the Swedes. I am sure your chick is 100 percent Swedish love. I was just noticing those dots on the chick in the picture and it reminded me of this other beautiful Swedish breed. Other than the legs, that coloring just didn't look Swedish to me either but the photo clarity is a bit off too. The other chick looks classically Swedish. I am the LAST person to say what is or isn't and I would love other peeps in here who know a lot more than I do to look at the picture and give thoughts. If he got his chicks from Greenfire, maybe he got an early Christmas present. lol.

Quote: I agree that this chick does not appear to be SFH. It also appears to be rumpless. It will be difficult to tell what it is until its adult plumage comes in, but I would say definitely cockerel (as is the black one). The coloring does not look like the 2 cockerels that I got from GFF that she said were Orust, but mine are not maturing to look like Orust at this point, either.

Hi KYTin!

Do the chicks you have that are supposed to be Orust have those dotted legs?
