Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Well I caught the dog in action today!

Unfortunately I did not have my duty weapon on! I was able to track the feathers to the dog owner.

Aside from criminal charges I need to figure out what restitution should be.

KILLED

1 Crested Swedish Flower Hen Rooster
1 Non-crested Swedish Flower Hen Rooster
BOTH OF MY BREEDERS!

1 Golden Laced Wyandotte Hen - Part of breeding trio
1 Rhode Island Red Hen

WOUNDED

2 Rhode Island Red Hens
1 Silver Laced Wyandotte Hen
1 Silver Laced Wyandotte/Barred Rock Cross
1 Golden Laced Wyandote Rooster

Kinda shocked that was all that was done as the dog got in the coop! Feathers and blood all over. Looked like a poultry horror movie scene.

What would you consider a fair dollar amount to claim for the SFH Roosters? I now have nothing to breed with.

replacement value, not face value. to replace them you will likely need to travel or ship the birds. find a breeder with what you want and work with them to find out how much it will cost.

Did you take pictures? because depends if the dog owner wants to pay for damages you might have to go to court. Pictures and any evidence you can get. Bring to the attention to the owner and of the cost of the damages. And tell them how much you'd want them to help in covering for the damages, explain the cost of the birds. I am terribly sorry that happen. I hate it when people don't watch their dogs. I myself keep getting a neighbors dog come over and pee everywhere. Unfortunately not everyone has the audacity to watch their own pets. This is the case when even dogs get hit by a car, so sad.

25 years ago we had our chickens attacked by 2, 1and1/2 year old, 150 lb wolf/huskies running loose. The owner "claimed" they were puppies.

Anyone need a Roo... I've got an extra Roo.

I'll be traveling to Dallas, TX from the D.C. Area and could provide transport to a meeting point late Thursday or Friday depending on your location.

Is there anyone around the Atlanta ga area with crested hens preferably black/white to breed to a salmon faverolle roo? Anyone think I can get bearded tufted and crested in one? Dinosaur like from jarassic park!

you mean like this? Weeble's silkie / ameraucana mix.

what is your eventual goal? most things are not possible to solidify in just one generation of crossing.

if you breed fav to sfh, you might get a crested (if you use a crested sfh) bearded and muffed, but also feather legged and no predictable color.

I like that favs scratch-less and the solid white mane and hens disposition. It seems the sfh has same temperament. I am only exploring ideas of interest with low cost for personal self sustaining flock on my blueberry farm. The favs ate also short and don't fly well so won't bother plants above around 30". I just came across the sfh and is second string idea of breeding. I am also going to explore showing birds with my four yr old daughter. So the disposition is important. Any suggestions of show breeds that are up and coming?

Alpine Chicken - Beautiful babies!

Thank-you!
I was going to wait until Spring and let my broodies take care of the next chicks, but of course THAT didn´t happen. So I now have 5 new babies (good hatch rate, too, I thought it wouldn´t work out because the eggs get too cold at these temperatures, but 5 out of 6 hatched!). Got a nice mix, too:
2 blacks:

2 chipmunks:

and one interesting grey speckled one- curious to see how he turns out:

I lost one of my Swedish Flower Hens today. My black crested hen was killed by a hawk while I was gone today. My daughter heard the commotion and went out in her bare feet to see what was the matter. She saw a small hawk, perhaps a peregrin or kestrel, on the fence to the pasture next to the SFH coop. She scared it away. I am not sure if the hen was already dead at that point and she just didn't see her, or if the hawk returned later. My husband found the hen when he went to lock up the coop tonight. Needless to say, the flock will be on lockdown until I do something to discourage the hawk. RIP Diamant!

So sorry, she was pretty! I hope the rest of your flock is safe now. I´ve had a few hens be taken by a weasel. They can be pretty nasty out here. I know how it feels.
