Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Are they good layers after a season? I have 4 hens, had them since last spring. I am only getting one egg per day, its spring already.
mine started laying just before this snow crap hit us a month ago, haven't gotten an egg from anyone since. LOL hoping it starts soon.

I don't know if you mentioned where you are, but in Virginia there's a wonderful organic feed place that does ship (expensive to ship, more so the farther away you are.) They sell no soy/no corn if that's important to you. I've had excellent results with this starter - pasty bottom is now a thing of the past. Even if you switch to a cheaper feed later, a non-medicated, organic, whole grain feed pays off with thsee chicks.

we get deliveries of non-gmo/sop in the Roanoke area (Christiansburg actually) on a monthly basis from a mill in the Staunton area, if I remember... for those in VA, if anyone's interested.

@ki4got
We may be talking about the same place! I'm in Kentucky, though, so not eligible for the stop off arrangement unfortunately. The shipping almost doubles the price of the feed, but it's such good stuff.

I am so blessed to have a real feed mill within an hour that can get most of what I want.

I feed fresh milled organic and I used to have them make it for me at the mill but I had to purchase a larger amount than I wanted as I didn't want it to sit around and get rancid (which it does as soon as the grain is ground...) So I started purchasing the ingredients from them and grinding my own. I'm able to fresh-grind enough for about a week at a time so it isn't old by the time they get it.

If you're able to get the organic feed grains & peas by the 50 lb bag it isn't quite as expensive. I use Fertrell Nutribalancer for the pre-mix and fish meal for the animal protein.

My mom had a vita-mix here at the house that I've been using to grind and it's working great!

Thank you. I'm in PA, so the shipping cost may be prohibitive, but I'll see what I can find in the way of organic feed up here.

Loved your workout video, Ashtree. Just too funny!
