Swedish Flower Hen Thread

My eggs from Duemig10 came in today... but no one was at home to receive them and they never called me to tell me I had a package at the PO, they just left one of those stupid pink "Sorry We Missed You" slips!

I'm going first thing tomorrow morning to pick them up!

Cute, do I see the start of a crest there??

I do!! These guys are only two weeks old but I definitely see crests on at least two of them. The crested one is bigger than the others and the little one was a late hatch, quite a bit smaller.

Don't you wish you could fire them?!!! Luckily they're eggs, not chicks!

I almost wished they were chicks, I almost certainly would have gotten a call then. I'm sure no one at my PO would want cheeping babies hanging around.

I've decided that it's alright though, the eggs are essentially resting right now. I've fired up the incubator and I'll go and get them first thing tomorrow morning and pop them in!

I did get chicks and I prefer to pay for them rather than iffy eggs. Anyhow they were still late. The first batch was half dead. The second was all ok. I did lose a marans from the second batch a few days later. Such is life. So far all the SFH chicks are doing ok. I do hope they look as nice when they grow up as the pics I'm seeing here.

You know one thing I was thinking about is that with the light on for heat they don't get the rest they would if they were tucked under their mothers wings. At least them the lights are out. I wish there was a cheap way to supply heat and turn out the lights. I wonder if I can make little sleeping masks to put over their eyes?

Take care,

Rancher

Have you looked at the Brinsea EcoGlow brooders? I have one and love it. No light involved (except the tiny red light to show it is on). and the chicks come and go from the heat as they please. Much more natural. While the initial cost is higher than a light bulb set-up, they have a much lower cost to operate, they say, than a light bulb.

I have two EcoGlows and I also love them. It's nice and warm under there. The only problem I have is having to clean it after they hop on top and poop on it!

The ceramic heat lamps (for reptiles) are totally amazing. Tons of heat, no light and virtually indestructible. They also screw into a regular heat lamp.

Just curious to know if anyone has any day old to 3-week old swedish flower hen chicks for sale. I just had a very disappointing hatch - only got one chick out of ten eggs. I'd really like a few more to go along with that little guy. I put a post in the WTB part of the forum, but I thought it made sense to ask here, too, since the SFH lovers are here. If you have any, you can PM me. THANKS!
