I hatched out 3 beautiful SFH'S in March. All 3 came through our Tucson summer just great!

Fantastic! That makes me a lot less weary about getting some. Thanks Sherrie.

A little update on our experiment with shipped eggs.

I set 19 eggs on the 19th.

6 were local eggs, a barnyard mix. 100% development. They look very good and actually a bit further along than the SFH eggs I set at the same time, despite being laid the day or or a day before I picked them up (and those were even kept in the fridge). They are mixed into the SFH randomly.

The rest are KYTinpusher's SFH eggs. Some were bubble wrapped alone. Some were in Mylar wrapped bubble wrapped packing. Some were in a can. She bubble wrapped them and put them in cookie tins to see if that helps.

Of those 13 SHF eggs, 7 are clear. I stuck them back in just in case I can't see the embryo. But I have serious doubts about them. That is about 55% nondevelopment, more or less.

Of the other 6, it is random which ones developed. For instance, there were 2 bubble wrapped and places in the box with no further protection. One is clear, one has veins. Same thing for the Mylar wrapped ones. And there are clears in the canned ones. So it tentatively appears that placing them in metal has no effect on embryo development, in that it does not result in more viability. The question for me remains will the embryos that do develop be able to hatch? In the past, that is where they die on me.

I would love it if even these 6 SFH eggs hatched.

Of the local eggs, I set brown ones instead of the cream or white ones she usually gives me hoping for something other than black roosters, lol.

And if this fails, I'm just going to order chicks or go pick up eggs when you lovely people have some available!

I'm getting a little nervous. I had been quite sure my crested girl, Frida, was... well... a girl! She went from my weakest chick to head of the flock. Now she's been sparring with Gunnar, my for-sure cockerel. Since she's crested, her comb is different from those of my non-crested birds and I don't have another crested pullet to compare to.

Pullets will spar with 'da boys... right?? Oh PLEASE let Frida continue being Frida and not *gasp* Frederic."

Sparring teens:

Gunnar's wattles are bigger, but Frida's are a little larger than those of the other pullets.
Opinions?

i would say, like weebs, look at the hackle and saddle areas. any rooster-ish feathers coming in? weebs is still in debate. LOL some slightly rooster-ish saddle feathers but no hackle or tail. and weeble hatched a full month + ahead of your sfh... (june 26)

i'll het a better pic of weeble aka sherimt (she-he-her-him-it) eventually

Sorry, but my guess is you have 2 roos there. The crested roos are sneaky and develop slower than the non-crested. The wattles on my pullets were almost non-existent until they were reaching POL. How old are they? They are gorgeous, though!

The 3 that I hatched in March were "fostered" at a friends house with her flock. I have since moved and gotten their pens ready so they came "home" Wednesday the 17th or this month. Since they had been in with a large flock it was impossible to tell who was laying.

Since the 17th I have gotten 2 eggs from my EO's (separate pen and a month younger than SFH) and none from the SFH. Think they are still upset about the move? They are 7 months old now.

Thanks...............

Yes, they do get upset by a change in environment. That combined with the shortening days and you may not see an egg for several weeks. Mine took a month and a half off when I moved them into their new coop this summer.

I was hoping it would make a difference. I certainly hope the 6 you have developing hatch, and hold out that the clears are just a little slow showing up. It's only day 5, isn't it?
