Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I can't wait to see this one all grown up! Do you have more Swedish or is this your only chick?

I have a few more, but they are only 2 weeks old. I just love this girl. She is super friendly. I need to talk KYTinPusher out of a few more eggs and try to hatch more like her.

I got a new girl this weekend! Already laying and she layed an egg in the carrier on the way home. I have to wait another few weeks to hatch her eggs (she was in with a black orp roo up until about 10 days ago) but I cant wait to hatch some swede babies here!! My boy was very happy when he met her!

i would say, if she's been away from him for 10 days, give her a couple more, but you should start hatching sfh if you're roo's doing his job. 8) 2 weeks is about the max for any 'roo juice' held back.

I had two SFH chicks hatch this last friday.

Here are a couple of picks of them today, at 5 days old.

The eggs came from Carol at Dogwood Trace Farms. These were my first hatching eggs and I was pleased to have 2 hatch. :) If they are able to be feather sexed, they are girls. I think. LOL Either way, the feathers looked the same on day 1, 2, 3. LOL

Squeee! They are just adorable. Those sweet little chicks are making me feel broody - LOL. I can't wait until my girls are laying!

I've actually hatched eggs that the newest layed were 3 weeks past the roo going to freezer camp. So I dont take any chances. I wait at least 3 weeks, more like a month. (I have a few half swedes in my incubator from my boy..) IMO thats one of the ways mixed chicks get sold as pure chicks though.. Thinking the other boy couldn't still have them fertile.

Totally random. One can, one bubble wrap.
I wonder if they just get zapped too much on the way here to hatch. Total bummer. The question now will be whether or not they hatch. I have run into a couple local people who say they won't do shipped eggs because they can't get them to hatch either. Weird, huh.
But the local eggs still all look amazing. Le sigh. I really don't need more mutts. The last 3 I hatched are still feathering out and thus in the brooder. These new ones will be living in a box!

Ok, here's my two cents worth on how the eggs are wrapped. I have ordered shipped eggs for almost 3 years now. I personally do not like, bubble wrap! It makes the eggs sweat.... If the eggs go from a cold environment to a warm, they sweat. I have had way more success with eggs that are in an egg carton, wrapped in paper towels and set into the carton. Then of course, a lot of padding in-between the carton. Much better success. Plus, it isn't as hard to unwrap. I swear, I have probably caused more damage to an egg just trying to get some of that tape off of that bubble wrap! Some use different/easier tape, but still, I am twisting, and turning that egg to get it out. When it is wrapped in paper, then set in the carton, I just have to pick it up carefully, and gently unwrap the paper. So easy! I have had better hatches almost every time with the paper wrapped and cartons.

Quote: personally, i've had about the same success with paper towel as bubble wrap, but i don't bother peeling tape, etc. i just cut it with scissors or a razor blade on one end and pop the egg out. if i want to recycle bubblewrap, i peel the tape later.

the best successes i have had, were where the eggs were laid sideways in the packing, not vertical like an egg carton would give normally... when i have had eggs in a carton, that was laid sideways (2 taped with bottoms together) was probably one of the best rates i've ever had. the worst were in those foam blocks some people use.

that applies especially to larger eggs, up to turkey and muscovy. the larger eggs seem to suffer shipping stresses (detatched air cells & ruptured yolks especially) more than small ones like quail eggs (90-100% hatch).
