Sweet coop DH built me!

Thanks Gail, I was planning on using silicon aquarium sealant, because I have a ton of it. Do you think that sounds okay? It is 100% silicone and non-toxic to fish, so I am assuming if the chickens ever did manage to get to it that it would be safe. I was also figuring it would help to keep the bees from nesting in the walls. Still need to attach their ramp, install two 7" x 12" Black Multi-Purpose Foundation Vents, the insulation and interior osb, roosts, nest boxes, linoleum, and the run. Oh yeah and one more window. I'm sure I've forgotten something or another while typing it out. It is by no means finished, I'm pretty excited about it, though.

@no1hilbily I was strongly considering one of those, apparently our Lowe's has switched brands and the "old" 10x10x6 ones are now on clearance for $144

Nice looking little coop he built ya there. I would like to suggest that you seriously consider going with siding (find a neighbor who is residing or a new home construction site and see what they have for left overs) OSB does NOT weather well. With what you would spend in paint, and sealants over only a few years, you would probably be doing better just to side it. Just my 2 cents, for what it is worth.

Either way, keep the pics comming as you complete the project!

If we do end up painting it now, it will be temporary until the budget allows me to get siding. We are planning to use cedar. The contractor cousin suggested Kilz2 as a primer, but he lives and works in a VOC restricted area of the state.

@Gail are the VOCs in oil-based primers okay for the chickens?

Thanks for all of your help!! It is greatly appreciated:)

I'd suggest the Zinsser Odorless Stain Blocker oil based primer (low VOC's), not only for the chickens but for yourself...especially if you plan on priming the inside of the coop too. I believe Kiltz also has an odorless oil based product.

I once used Kiltz oil based primer (NOT odorless) on a smallish (8 x 8 foot) bedroom in one of our rental properties ...and end up loopy as heck long before I was finished, even with the windows open. Knocked out quite a few much needed brain cells with that project!. I wouldn't even try to use such a product in an area the size of a coop.

The odorless stain blocker primers are much easier in regards to the loopy factor.

Gail

Thanks for the heads up, can't think of anything I need less than to get looped on primer:lol:
