The type I use looks like course sand and works great. I don't know if they call it granules or powder. I will look at the bag when I get home, if you don't have an answer by then. It works great
I did check the bag and they are granules. It is the only kind I have used, so I still don't know for sure if the powder would work. I think the powder would do the job but will be messier to use. The DE that I sometimes use is powder and has not been a problem. If it doesn't take long and cost extra I would let him send it back, but if it is inconvenient or there is a restocking fee I would just use it and see how it does. If it is just on the poop boards it should not be hard to change out or add granules to if needed.
