Sweet PDZ versus DRYSTALL? for odor

http://www.tractorsupply.com/red-la...s-earth-with-calcium-bentonite-20-lb--1019864

Can anyone provide experiences on using DE in the duck house: specifically, how well does it absorb moisture, and how much do you use in what size coop, and how often? My floor is linoleum, so moisture will not have an opportunity to sink into the soil. I'm trying to figure out how to do deep litter and stay dry without a soil floor (water porch, so only dealing with bio-waste).

Thanks, Tahai

I have used DE on the wood floor of my coop (treating the whole floor like a poop board and scraping daily, sprinkling more DE down).

DE doesn't absorb odors anywhere near as good as sweet PDZ. It is also significantly dustier.

I used both Stall Dry (Canadian product) and Sweet PDZ. I found out both of them works well.

DE does not do anything for me..I used to think they are great but really, no.

I use DE in my little coop, mostly for mite/worm control. In the run, which is wooden floored and open to the weather on three sides, the DE doesn't do too well when wet. It kind of turns to a cross between clay and tooth paste. For odor control it is passable. For wetness, not so much. I'm thinking about trying the SweetPDZ in the cat scratch boxes though. That sounds promising!

Quote: Put down about 8 inches of pine shavings and about 40 lbs of Lime and then keep adding shavings as needed.
"Deep Litter" is not hard to do.
It's exactly what the name says, and nothing more.

Don't worry about stirring it or cleaning it all the time, since the whole point of it is to leave it alone and let it work for you

Sweet PDZ is $10 for 25 lbs. Plain Ag Lime is $8 for 50 lbs and DE is even more expensive. I'd save the DE for treating mites, etc. PDZ is better odor control but more expensive as well. I have 6 horses and use the Ag lime to keep their stalls smelling better and it works pretty good. Couldn't afford PDZ in this application. I've seen some people use PDZ in a kitty litter box under a raised roost and sift it out like a kitty litter box.

If you're using a DRY deep litter method (as I do), then yes, you do have to keep it stirred up in order to keep dry and avoid any odor.
I rake mine a little in the morning when I let the chickens out.
You can also just sprinkle some bread crumbs or scratch on top and let the chickens keep it all stirred up.

If you're using a WET deep litter method, then you do not need to stir it up since you will want it to compost and keep moist underneath.

Does anyone know the actual difference between Sweet PDZ and Stall Dry brand? DH went to the feed store and they called their Cisco distributor. They were told they carry Stall Dry but that it's the same as Sweet PDZ. I thought they were different. I know both are fine for coops. DH is going to pick some up for me on Tuesday (he picks up feed and supplies from the distributors for this store).
