Just bought some at the store and cleaned out all my bedding. So far I am in love! ...the chicks not so much. The older ones are refusing to touch it. Just sitting on top of their feeder and perch. And the young ones are screaming like crazy lol.

Has this happened to anyone else? Why are they scared of it? If they eat it is it ok?

Thanks for listening silly little chicks

Ok thank you! They are such goof balls. I had to go back and look through old post to make sure I wasnt suppose to mix it with something else. I've got it about an inch thick and they don't know what the heck to do.

We raised ours from "chickdom" on PDZ (in the brooder and now in the coop) and it worked *really* well. Grab a kitty litter scoop and some 1/4" hardware cloth and you'll make a great little poop scoop...there's a thread on here about it somewhere.

Thank you! I got the kitty scoop today but I'm noticing that the holes are too big for the smaller chicks poop. I will try to search for that thread sounds like a good idea

I found the thread...wasn't from here though. Look at the picture of the little girl with the red rake. I took one of the reptile scoops and put the 1/4" hardware cloth on it with tie wraps. Took a bit to get it right, but it works like a charm. Still using it now that the girls are out in the coop. Thread is: http://ourcountrychronicles.blogspot.com/2012/02/coop-management.html

I also just got a larger scoop because I can't reach into the back 1/3 of the coop...so I ordered this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004UR1X50/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - works fantastic with the sweet pdz in the coop.

Edit: Just found the original with the correct scoop and it was a thread from here! Here ya go... https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/621363/poop-board-convert-warning-graphic-gross-poop-pictures

Hi I use PDZ and made a scoop out of a milk jug by drilling little holes in it...
Got the idea from someone here on BYC

Thanks for all the great . I have found 1 flaw to it so far. Its so dusty! the room i keep my chicks in is very dusty. The floor is a mess and sometimes it can get a little stuffy in there. I want to use it for my coop but might make a mixture with pine shavings while they are still in the brooder

This is exciting news to me (Sweet PDZ). I can't wait to try it out in my coop this spring. I have a very thick layer of shavings right now. All summer, we just used a few, under the roosting area, to help make it a little easier to clean. When the hens were little chicks, in the brooder, we used shavings and still had a lot of dust. I think they create a lot of it, just because they are constantly growing and the skin flakes and falls off. Next time we buy chicks, I'm going to try PDZ because it will be so much easier to keep them from walking around in poo. Even though we changed their bedding everyday, they manage to walk in it. I would try to pick out the clumps of poo, every few hours, but it is a losing battle.
