Swelling in cheek/eye area

Thank you for all the kind advice. I do have VetRX as well as neosporan. The eye itself looks fine. The swelling is between her eye and the corner of her mouth. It looks, like possibly, it isn't quite as swollen today. Can you use hydrocortisone on chickens? I thought it might be a reaction to a insect bite? I'll try the others first.

well I would not use it
there I nothing about using it on chickens.
BUT note this as to humans and using around the eye.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using Hydrocortisone cream if you:

  • are treating a child as long term use in children is not recommended. Do not use under a nappy or airtight dressing for more than five to seven days
  • are applying the cream to the face, particularly around the eyes. Do not use the cream for longer than your doctor has advised
  • have a skin infection. If the condition appears to be getting worse despite using antibiotics prescribed, stop using the cream and contact your doctor
  • suffer with psoriasis.

This morning her swelling seemed less, but just a few minutes ago I checked on her and there was a yellow crust around her eye. To me, that indicates infection. I cleaned it off carefully and applied neosporin, thanks to previous advice. She laid an egg today so hopefully she will be all better soon. Thank you, again, for all the helpful advice! This is a great group!

Glenda,
Thank you so much for doing all that research and sharing what you found with me. I have applied the neosporin twice today, once after removing the yellow crust, and again this evening. I think it looks like it's getting better. I am going to try your wet mash recipe too. I have been giving them Big Ol Bird probiotics in their water occasionally, but I think it is now past it's expiration date and from what I'm learning probiotics in a bottle may actually be useless.

Well, to add insult to injury this morning I picked her up to check her eye and there was a swollen tick on her eyelid! Off came the tick and on went more antibiotic cream! She still has a bit of swelling, more around the corner of her mouth, but it doesn't appear to be getting worse.
