Swine Flu

Can the swine flu affect my chickens? If so what can I do to prevent it. I am not freaking out but just in case.........

I think you better keep your family and self protected
DO NOT go around any one who has any kind of flu
Do not go around any one just back from mexico

the flu you get can be carried into the chickens by your shoes and clothes
so take precaution to your family and the chickens will be okay

All flu is avian (birds) in origin. Actually it travels around the world in waterfowl (ducks) then mutates to infect other creatures so as to insure its survival. You can get flu shots to help protect yourselves from getting sick, but it wouldn't prevent you from carrying a flu virus around on your breath. Check out BirdFluBook.com, but don't freak out, just try to inform yourself. I looked it up when a neighbor kept implying my pet chickens carry diseases, so woopee doo now I know something about the flu. Nice silver lining to getting insulted by a bossy-know-it-all-neighbor. Now I am informed so I can relax about it, and I don't forget to be thankful for marvelous immune systems in healthy beings. Remember the day you got over a bad cold or flu? That was a great day, remember? And indulge in your favorite soap for good old fashioned hand washing. Good luck to us all!
