Swinging Perches

I have some chickens, wretched rebels, who like to roost in trees... I hope they read this and see what proper chickens should act like!

I've never met a really smart chicken, sneaky yes. smart no!

We have a few roosts in the run and one of them swings. The chickens love it, it is their favorite place to sit in the evening after they come in and before heading up to bed. Reminds me of a bunch of old ladies rocking on the front porch.

But if I see any of them pulling out some knitting......

Really? In nearly 25 years of chicken experience I have found chickens to be quite intelligent.

I am also surprised that you think chickens are not graceful.

To the OP: Go ahead and use your swinging roost. If the chickens don't like it they will stay off it. And don't worry about it being round... chickens were here for thousands of years before the 2x4 and mananged to survive!!

Absolutely! I thought about hanging a 2x4 but I think I'd like a more natural look. Real wood won't last as long, but I can just switch it out b/f it rots. I like the look of the one posted on page 1, so I'll try to emulate that.

It might depend on the breed, by BOs shunned the swinging roost I put up for them, it was set the same height and same place as their former favorite roost. It didn't swing crazy or anything, but I knew I had made a mistake when they were sleeping under it one afternoon. They are big girls, and no not very graceful, they galumph. They have their old one back.

Well, I don't know if my girls will use it or not. Right now they never go up on any perch during the day--they have no perches in their run except a few chunks of cut trees, which they sometimes sit on but not often. And they don't go into the henhouse during the day at all unless it's really raining hard. So we'll see! I'm in the middle of a big reno so I might as well add the swing in and see what they think!

If you want to get really 'irresponsible' pawsplus I will show you the chicken catapult I am planning on building to help them fly:)

I put up a swinging perch last night and my two wyandotte pullets loved it so much they decided to sleep there last night!! (its July so nice and warm outside) Its about 3 feet off the ground but there is a perch below that they can jump from. Also,

i found it swung too much with just one wire so I put two screws about 12" apart and threaded the wire through on each side. This stabilized it from swinging back and forth and now it mostly moves side to side like a battering ram. I am so glad I decided to give this a try!
