First off, I offer this: I'm an egg fanatic. This explains why I was looking so closely at this egg.

I collected this egg the other day from a new layer. When I brought it in & went to weigh it (as I do all my eggs), I noticed it had a really neat swirl pattern to it. I never gave much thought to how the egg passes down the duct, but guess I just assumed it was a "straight shot," so to speak. This egg shows that the egg actually twirls around as it passes through, which I found very interesting and just wanted to share. I wonder if there's a purpose for it twirling in the duct?

Sorry for so many pics - it was sort of difficult to get an angle that really showed the swirl well:

That's so pretty!! My BC Marans laid her first egg the other day...it's a fairly dark brown w/ very dark (almost black) spots...so pretty! I can't decide if I want to hatch it or blow it out and keep it.

Congrats on your first egg! It's not a good idea to hatch pullet eggs...you really want to give them time to regulate. Give it a few weeks before you hatch some, just to be safe.

I wish mine were more speckly. Here are a few of my most recent, with a TINY Marans pullet egg in the center. The other eggs are from EEs and the far right is from an Isa Brown. I was shocked when I found it - it weighed only .65 ozs.!

Wow! I wonder if you can do chicken ballistics testing, and figure out which chicken laid which egg by matching the "rifling"?

"On the next CSI: Chicken Coop - Did this egg come from the RIR or the BSL?"

Seriously, though, this is pretty fascinating - and great pics!!!

I know a lot of people don't hatch pullet eggs, but I've done it as long as they're a good size. This one is literally the size of one of my RIR eggs...no "pullet eggs" here. I don't know how she started out that big, but she did!

OMG, sfw2 - ONLY a true chicken lover would tune in to THAT episode; however, we have so many chicken lovers here on BYC, it COULD be a hit!

I'm pretty sure I know who laid it. I'm a REAL chicken geek...spend time watching them go in & out of nest boxes. Sigh...I need to find a new hobby!

Cool swirl!

What do you use to weigh your eggs? I want to weigh my gigantic blue eggs...but I don't think I have a scale of the right kind. Maybe I'll take one to the grocery store scale.

The scale I use is just a freebie one that DH got from the doctor. He gave him an office sample of a new med he wanted DH to try for awhile, and it came with a small digital scale that weighs in lbs./ounces/grams. I think I have a pic of it when I weighed that tiny egg...let me see....(yes, I REALLY am egg-addicted!):
