Has anyone completely switched from chicken feed to mealworms? I've read that if you breed your own you can save a lot of money. Apparently, you won't have to buy chicken feed anymore just as long as you still feed them fruits, veggies, etc.

How many chickens you got and have you done the math and know you can raise enough? Also they would sure need other things other than mainly meal worms----that's a lot of protein.

I read that you should feed them half a cup per chicken along with fruit and veggies. Is there anything else I should feed them along with it?

Listen, was this reading you done written by a feed specialist that has done the research, formula, etc or just a person on here that is telling the way they done/suggest?? If you throw a cup of meal worms to your chicken every day---I bet it will devour the meal worms and leave the vegetables? What kind of vegetables are you planning to feed them? They will not eat some vegetables. They are yours and you can feed them any way you want---I would suggest you just do your home work and mix them a good app 16% feed/mix so they will do decent.

I have no doubt the birds could thrive on such a mixture. The problem will be the cost of rearing the meal worms. Mine can handle more than 1/2 cup daily and at some point will want to switch over to greens. A real problem with my meal worm culture system is I use chick starter as part of the meal worm feed. That needs to be compared with the amount fed to birds directly.

I give my pullets meal worms only for a treat. I mix their feed with fruit or veggies and plain Greek yogurt. I also give them a hard boiled egg. Can i give them boss if it is warm outside?
