We found our first egg today in the run, not in the nest.

We have 8 hens about the same age, give or take a few weeks. They are currently eating medicated chick feed. Do we switch them all to layer pellets?

Yeah I would....the medicine in the food is only to prevent coccidosis and isn't necessary for them if they are laying age. Most people say it's not harmful to eat eggs from chickens on medicated food but I don't.

Congratulations on your first eggs though!!!

Yeah, you can switch them to the layer feed.

I only feed medicated feed to baby chicks, and when the bag is done, I switch to a grower feed.

Then when they are at laying age, I switch them to a layer feed and provide some extra calcium on the side.

A cheap way to give them extra calcium is to feed them back the egg shells after your done eating the eggs.

I throw the egg shells onto the ground and crush them a bit with my foot so they don't look like eggs.

The girls love to eat the shell bits.

Enjoy your fresh eggs!!!
