Swollen abdomen in Runner Duck - Help

Keisha has an implant paired with lupron injections that last for 6-9 months per dose (Keisha needed 11 doses, which costs nearly $2k on its own, so our vet decided to use the implant combined with 6 doses for now, and we are most likely getting the remaining doses in 3 weeks... goodbye money. 👋).

Everything aside, for anyone who wants or needs to do this for their duck or hen, it's not cheap but for us (and Keisha) it's been worth it.

She's moving slowly still but eating and drinking. Limping a bit, but she has the implant, stitches, and also received today's injections at the vet without sedatives... for her safety.

She spends the next 2 weeks inside relaxing and being pampered. She's not allowed to be near the boys (trying to keep her body from instinctively wanting to lay eggs and fighting the meds).

We DID let her into the yard for 5 minutes, though, to walk in the grass and say hello to the boys after nearly a week without them. The boys went nuts and ran in circles, so excited. Keisha just wanted to forage. Lol

Will share the vet's info tomorrow.

Thanks again for staying with us for this crazy journey!

For anyone interested, this is the vet we used. Even if you're out of state, it's well worth the travel (we drove 3hrs each way).

Dr. April Ramagnano, PhD, DVM, ABVP
Avian and Exotic Clinic of Palm City
Palm City, Florida
Emergency/After Hours (her cell): 561-723-0025

Her bio is impressive and she has t9ns of experience.

She works evenings and will provide personalized updates. She's also following up with us daily on Keisha's recovery.

100% recommend!

PS... is there a thread to share Avian vets so I can add Dr. April's contact info there, too, for anyone who may be looking?

She's doing great! She's gained her weight back (we weigh her each morning), her stitches have healed well (she gets them removed next week, along with getting her remaining lupron injections... goodbye, money!), and she is running so fast I can barely catch up to her. She's still indoors every night and comes inside midday to rest in a soft dog bed. She seems to be molting again, though. Feathers everywhere.

Wondering if it's because we're preventing her from laying with the implant and lupron. She seems happy, though. Back to her normal, bossy self.

Thanks for the update so great to hear how well she is doing. I do believe you’re right on why she’s molting. Hopefully she’ll grow all her new feathers in before cold weather starts.

We're in Florida, so no cold weather here :) Plus she comes inside to sleep and after it rains so she can dry (she doesn't have the oil her feathers need, so she always looks like a wet leaf of bread, as does her son). She loves to be out in the rain with the boys to play in the mud.

Update on Keisha: She's happy, healthy, active, and crazier than ever. She runs so fast, swims like a duckling, and has laid zero eggs! Her stitches were removed weeks ago and have healed really well. Her feathers grew back. She's better than she's ever been.

Just sharing. :)

She's the one in the middle of the 2nd photo.
