swollen and scabby ear

Yes it looks like it. I would clean out the ear canal, and keep checking it daily. We don’t like to use antibiotics in chickens without a good reason, but if cleaning and getting the ear canal open doesn’t help, that might be something to think about. Vet care is great, but not always available or affordable.

This is a small thing but it might help a little
Carefully drop a small amout of rubbing alcohol into the ear canal.
It will help clean and also dry excess moisture in there and that will feel a bit nicer.
Just take care and avoid the eyes, yours and the bird's. .

thank you I will try it. though I must mention it is kind of scabby so it is hard to see the opening.... do I need to remove the scabs with a tweezer? I dont want to injure the litter guy

If anything i'd soften the scabs, that will normally be enough to get you to the canal.
Im always kind of wary of removing scabs, softening and sliding over is less painful and stressful.
Qtip with coconut oil dabbed on and left is how I soften, depending on the scab thickness sometimes it takes a repeat dab.

what should I use to soften? can I use a clean washcloth with some warm water? or just the qtip with peroxide or alcohol?

Did you read the links in post 6? Those have a lot of info on removing scabs, treating with hydrogen peroxide, and neosporin in the canal.
