Hey guys, sorry for being MIA. Having 7 ducklings and 5 kids and a million home projects leaves one....tired.
took Pickles to the vet, they said it was a gland infection. Gave her a needle of something (my wife was there not I) and prescribed clamoxicilin(?). A combination of amoxicillin and something else. This seemed to make it worse. Called the vet today and the sample they tookcame back as e. Coli. May need surgery at the university of Guelph veterinary school. hope it doesn’t come to that as I don’t know we can afford a big bill.
I’ll keep you posted.
That’s what confused me when my wife came back from the vet, they didn’t drain it. Apparently, they were super excited to get a duck, which means they don’t have a lot of experience with them. For better or worse, Guelph Vet School is only an hour away and is highly rated, especially with farm animals (being right in farm country). Why can’t they just clean it out? I hope it doesn’t come to surgery! Thanks for updating
This is the new antibiotic we were given. I’m trying to figure out how to do this. I’ve mixed the stock solution (100mg in 1.7L). Next is mixing 30ml stock solution into 4L. Fine, easy enough. But how do I deliver this to Pickles in a way she isn’t going to walk all in it and contaminate it AND give her access to bathing/swimming water? Thoughts? That's what Todd had and my Avian get said amoxicillin wouldn't touch it. Gave her Bactrim wwhich cleared it in about a week. I trust my vet more than yours I think. She treats lots of birds. You could talk to your get about this. She also removed most of the fluid with a syringe. I wouldn't consider surgery till you tried a different antibiotic. Duck can easily die under anesthesia and then you have a big bill and no duck.
