Swollen eye and face: Treatment Progress (ADVICE WELCOME!)

Day 6: Looking good! As I was giving the Baytril this morning, I got worried for a second I had grabbed the wrong chicken since it looked so normal!!

There's still a little puffiness, but it almost looks like it's just loose/stretched skin rather than true swelling at this point.

Today is her last full day of treatment. She will have one final round tomorrow, but I'm on the road really early for work, and while my lovely husband will do chores for me, he said medicating a chicken is up to me :) So she'll get her last doses tomorrow evening.

She hasn't laid at all in over a week, but I'm going to assume that's because this daily handling and medication process has been stressful.

I don't see any reason to bring her back to the vet or refill the prescriptions, but will give him a call to confirm.

I don't think I'll ever really know if this was a bug bite or a true eye infection- or if it would have just gotten better on its own without medication- but I'm glad she seems to be doing better.

Are we DONE with this process yet??!

She's looking great! Congratulations on a job well done.

Are you considering a few days of probiotics after treatment so her body can recover from the stress of the anti-biotics? Either something water soluable or some yogert. I would suggest offering her something as the antibiotics can really mess up the normal flora.

She definitely looks like a different chicken though. What a pretty face!

As a PS you have done an excellent job of documenting this illness and response to treatment. Somebody, somewhere and some time later will look at this and know exactly what you did to help your hen.

Day 8: I think we're pretty much back to normal! The skin is still a little puffy around the eye, but in person I think that's because it got a little stretched out with all the swelling.

(excuse the somewhat dirty face, she was out scratching around the yard this morning)

@microchick , they actually all get Probios every morning with their "breakfast." She was actually eating it all last week, even though I know the antiobiotics were wiping out the good stuff plus bad. But, they get it sprinkled over their feed every day so she will start to get back on track.

Thanks everyone for all the encouragement-it made it easier to stay motivated to do those eye drops 3x a day!

oooh, perfect thread! I didn't get to the last page yet...I have I think 3 or 4 with this, not as bad, but not right either. I was wondering which antibiotic to start them on....argh... And I can't find my VetRx.

Cant wait to find out more! I am starting some type of treatment tomorrow!

Hmmm, good news on Page 3, complete recovery!

I also have no discharges from nose or eyes, no sneezing, coughing, or loss of production. They seem fit and well, other than these weird swelling around the outside of the eye.

I don't have baytril, I can try oxytet first, might as well treat everyone, grrrr.

So glad you shared your experience!

Just wanted to give a final wrap-up to this thread. We're about a week and half out from the last dose of antibiotics and drops, and Broody is still looking good. Here she is tonight on her way to bed:

You can't really tell in the pictures, but in person, it does seem like the skin around her eye is still a little stretched. Doesn't seem to bother her at all.

She laid today for what I think is the first time since this incident began. We still have 4 more days of egg withdrawal, so sadly it went in the trash, but glad to see her back on her routine!

Thanks again to everyone for pulling for her. While it's frustrating to not know what happened to her in the first place, I'm glad to have her back to health!

Glad she's all healed up. Now I have a question that I meant to ask from the start but kept forgetting. With the baytril, I thought I read somewhere that if using baytril you weren't suppose to consume the meat or eggs from this hen anymore? I forget what the reason was but maybe someone with more info can chime in.

Hi Tony, how's your rooster?

As far as Baytril and eating eggs- I think there is some controversy about this because there are no large scale studies in laying hens looking at the potential effects/transfer of antibiotics through the eggs. I guess reason being large producers tend to cull rather than treat individuals? My vet recommended a two-week withdrawal period. Some people will disagree with this. Personally, I'm ok with it.

Hi
I'm actually at the vets today to see if we can finally figure this out. He hasnt gotten any better and with work being so busy i really didn't have the time to bring him any earlier. Hopefully this isn't new to them.
How's your girl doing?
