Swollen Eye

Well, again, it needs to be opened up and drained. And the pus cultured so you know you're using the right abios. Your vet should know to do this . . .

I haven't found vets here aren't awfully forthcoming with the whole cultures and finding-the-right-antibiotic thing. I'm not sure if we have the facilities

It's frustrating because I read about the services in America but cannot access them for my own birds.

That said, as pawsplus has said, it needs to be opened and drained and there's no reason at all for a UK vet not to do that. Don't be shy about asking or making demands if necessary - you're paying for a service and it's your animal's life at stake!

My vets were great and said by friday if there is no improvement that they would do a biospy. But I'm afraid its the cost involved. It's harder in the uk because we are only just discovering the pleasure of chickens and the vets are starting to realise that. My vet said she was looking to go on a course. There is a place about an hour away from me that does a 2 and a half hour course on keeping chickens which i will be going on.

Martha has been out in the garden tonight. I have fed her some treats which she ate. I managed to get another photo to show you to see if you think there is any change.

What do you guys think? x

Hiya guys

Little update. Yesterday Martha had no voice, Today she is making a little noise, but i have spotted several spots of blood. She is still spirited thou. She went into the garden after having her eye cream and lead me a merry chase to catch her again. Tried with the warm compress but no way would she keep her head still. I wrapped her in a blanket to keep hold of her, but her little head wriggled out of any hold!! - Me being to inexperienced to hold her properly.
Will keep you posted. xx

Thank you for the update on Martha! I hope she continues to improve. Has the abscess started to drain at all? They love that yogurt, Spirited and noise = better!!

Hiya Pokster,
She's still with us! Think the eye is the same (so hard for me to tell). It's not bubbling anymore. She is still active. Got antibiotics for another week. She laid another egg this morning. As long as she keeps trying I will too. xx

I hope she continues to get better. It sounds like she has a wonderful spirit and so do you. I pray she has a full recovery.
