I noticed my hen had a swollen eye 2 or 3 days ago. But after putting them up tonight, I noticed it has closed all the way. The other eye looks completely normal but the other is swollen shut. Today she seems to be almost sneezing and making weird noises with her nose. I didn’t know if she scratched her eye or if it was something else, 817CB40C-50DD-4F3A-ABC7-9B90424C6945.jpeg

It could be early signs of a respiratory disease, such as mycoplasma gallisepticum that causes conjunctivitis (pinkeye) and sinus infection. I would open her eye and look for any bubbles, debris, or pus in the eye. You can get some saline eye wash and clean the eye twice a day. Terramycin eye ointment from the feed store, or plain Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment is good to apply to the eye after cleaning it. If it is MG, and the symptoms do not clear up with the eye ointment, symptoms can be treated with Tylan (tylosin) in the water which can be ordered her:

Dosage is 1 tsp (5grams) per gallon of water for 5 days.

Thank you so much! Should I separate her or leave her with my other chickens?

The others most likely have been exposed at the same time she was, so there may not be a need. But if you give the oral antibiotic, you may want to seaparte her in a dog crate so that only she gets the medicated water. Have you added any new birds to your flock in recent weeks?

No new additions. Our most recent was in July so I don’t think it’s that.

MG is present in a lot of backyard flocks. Wild birds can bring it in, and chickens may be symptom free until a time of stress, such as cold weather or molting.
