I have a two year old hen that has a swollen face. Her nostrils are clear and her eyes are not running, but her face and surrounding areas are swollen almost like they are fluid filled. Any ideas? She's the only one in my small flock having issues. Her face and throat have been swollen for nearly two days now, that I have noticed anyway.. I have seperated her and started her on chick starter to boost protein, just in case.. I haven't the slightest idea what is going on with her. She hasn't been outside the coop and no large animals(rodents only, to my knowledge) have been in the coop. She has a scab to one side of her face, at the corner of her beak. I soaked it and peeled it, hoping to find maybe a wound, but I couldn't find anything blatently obvious. She's eating and drinking to my knowledge.

Any ideas?

Do you have a picture? Does she smell bad at all?

This is a picture of one of my pullets suffering from infectious coryza...you can see how badly her eyes and face are swollen.

She didn't smell bad, that I noticed. It's hard to tell from the picture, but it looks similar. I'll have to do some research on what your pullet had.

Research for Cholera
Seperate her from the rest of the flock untill she is better. Even after chicken is better with most diseases the birds are then carriers....I am no expert just learning myself.

I did a quick search.

If this is what my hen has, how noticeable is the smell? Are eggs carriers?

I am trying to figure out what I need to do, because I planned on selling eggs and chicks in spring. I haven't gone to other poultry farms or introduced birds to my flock in several months, how would this just pop up all of a sudden?

Does this hen need to be culled? How contagious is this?

I know it sounds like I'm freaking out, it's just I hate to lose my little flock to something like this.

Don't panic. There are soooo many things it could be. My little hand book says for each disease there are 4 or 5 other things it resembles.

Could she have been stung my something?? I was raking leaves today down by the coop and uncovered a huge potato bug, they bite hard......My grandparents raised chickens hundreds at a time. Dad said one day they'd be out peckin' in the field the next day sick or dead.

I just went through Coryza with 4 of my chickens. We decided that culling would be best. I sell eggs, fertile eggs, chicks and chickens. I didn't want the hassle of it spreading to the rest of my flock. Although the only symptom my chickens had were the bad smell. It reminded me of pus. I now have to keep an eye on the rest of my flock for the next 3 weeks and hope that it hasn't passed to anymore chickens. I did read that if your chickens are carriers that it won't be passed through the eggs. I hope your hen doesn't have it. Good luck!

hey

I am getting bummed...my chickens are slowwwly going through the pox and some of them seem to have either CRD or Coryza...

I don't know what to do!!!
