SWOLLEN frostbit wattle

ok...i've done some reading....

I've got a red star roo with frostbite on his comb and wattles...the wattles concern me the most...they are pretty swollen.

He eats...drinks...mates...crows....

but he shakes his head a lot and I wondered about his breathing...? I thought I heard it but now I'm not so sure if it's just cause I caught him and he was scared at the moment...because now I don't hear it.

I brought him into my 3 season porch...in a cage...covered up with 2 thick blankets....searching for an extra lamp....

I thought cutting his wattles off would help him.

But what's this MOON thing? and what's it say about tonight?

And does swelling go down if I don't dub or is it best I dub?


and no...you don't get any pics...i can't do that now with what I have...or don't have.


The tips of his comb started to turn black. Now the back portion looks yellowish and crusty. The wattles have swollen...one worse then the other but it's not affecting his eating or drinking that I have noticed.

He has found a high place to roost in the coop and it's closer to the cieling where there is a draft and I don't know how to convince some of them...that's not the best seat in the house....nothing I can really do about it now at any rate.

And I have 3 heat lamps on in the coop to try to battle this cold. We are having a cold snap here presently... it was -2 and that wasn't factoring in the wind chill.

so....large sharp scissors...alcohol...flour to stop blood...don't pull or stretch....do at night....

Moon?

pain med?

antibiotic?

keep him on porch as warm as i can keep him...for how long till bring him back to coop?

and how much blood should I expect? I don't bandage it or something? just snip and go?

and do i gotta? cut it off? or swelling won't go down with neosporin and NOT advanced or super neosporin... i read that opa...not the heavy duty stuff...i've got the regular...bout 5 tubes of it...actually.

i did just buy some terriyaki...


and he is the roo the ladies all squak at him and tell him NOOOO! and he doesn't listen.


and i'd rather cut a wattle then a head off...i just haven't brought myself there yet....

I'd keep him on the 3 season porch for the night, it's only getting colder. From what I've read on here most frostbite cases take care of themselves if you correct the temp problem. If you choose to dub him you might want to let the swelling go down so you can see what tissue is actually dead. One of my roo's got frostbite one night when it went down to neg 10 F a couple weeks ago. The tips of two of his comb spikes are starting to die back and shrivel up. Good luck

My roo that has a HUGE comb and wattles also got frost bitten. What I did for him was put Lansinoh on him and kept an eye on him. In 2 weeks the dead tissue fell off. No signs of infection. He did seem uncomfortable for a day or two when it was swollen and black but then he was fine.

You biggest concern it infection to the site.

If I had the choice between meatball surgery (a wattlectomy) and a quick chop and process. i think I'd take the quick chop. I would imagine that the wattle would bleed pretty profusely. But, hey I'm no expert...just a man who likes to eat chicken...

Are you attached to your roo, g? Understandable if you are...

but if you're not...

chicken fajitas sound good to me...

no...i'm not attached to this roo...he's an *bleep*.


but i've never culled one....yet....and don't feel like pyschin' myself out to do it right at the moment.


but i do love fajitas.

so for now...he stays.

Maybe you can change his name to Fajita, put some neosporin and vaseline on his wattle and give him a little french beret to keep his head warm....

where else can you get such high quality advice?
