Swollen neck? (updated w/ pics. Still needing help.)

Ooow, I don't think that's anywhere near the crop. I wonder what that is? I have no idea what that could be.

Its amazing how helpful a picture can be.

I just lanced her cheeks and blood came out. I was expecting clearish fluid so I'm not sure what to make of blood. I'm on my way out to get antibiotics and vitamins.

I've been searching for hours this very condition. My hen's neck has a large bulge on it. The bulge is not her crop. It's balloon-like. The picture posted early in this thread looks very much like my hen's problem. Did you ever figure out what was wrong and what to do about it?

I finally decided that she had a bacterial infection of some type and treated her with antibiotics for 7 days. Seemed to solve the problem. We didn't eat her eggs for the 7 days she was on antibiotics plus 7 days after. She's fine now but that part if her neck doesn't have feathers any more. Very weird.

I have had this twice with my birds, it was an obstruction in the throat, I just massaged it down carefully & it went. Sometimes they try to swallow things that are too big to swallow & then struggle to eat for a few days since the obstruction just gets bigger in the top of the throat, particularly if they free range & are eating large pieces of greans

He was as good as new in seconds. Never try & puncture something like that unless its a last resort because A) you open the bird up to further infection around that area B) the infection could spread into the throat lining if you open it up & some bacteria from the impaction leaks into the flesh & C) you probably couldn't pull a lettuce leaf out through a needle sized hole anyway.
Just my experience, I was browsing the older threads & thought I'd add my 2 cents.

I had a similiar experience with a roo last summer..only his was more swollen around his head..The only thing that look similiar was Swollen Head Syndome in turkeys.. He was like that for 2 weeks..I did drain the area 2x with a very small gauge needle and only got very clear fluid out. I did end up giving him some prednisone after about a week but dont really know if it helped him heal any faster or not.. I did create a thread on here somewhere about it..no one really had any idea about what it was but the general advice was to cull him. I am a softy and chose to try to nurse him back.. He is not allowed to breed and if he does, those eggs are eaten just in case it was something genetic but I have another roo and a hen from the same breeder, same batch that are healthy as can be and Ive not had any issues out of.. I def love BYC for threads like this..this is the first place I come when I have questions and 99.9% of the time I find an answer <3

Here is a pic of my roo..
This was the first week...

The second week...

And this was him after he healed (somewhat)--he still has a 'wrinkled' face from the swelling but it is no where near as noticable in this pic.. If you didnt look close I dont think you would even notice...

** Just posted here in case someone else ever has a similair experience ..this is a great thread for this topic, thats for sure!!
