Please see my former post "sore on rear". My favorite hen has stopped eating and i don't think she is laying. She has a swollen red area on her bottom the size of a large grapefruit. it feel warm like there is an infection. the mass feels watery and squishy rather than firm. poop is now watery and there isn't much.

her overall comb color looks the same. her eyes look the same but the other day she was very lethargic. her activity level today seemed about normal but she is usually very loud and has stopped calling and making noise like she usually does.

i live in the city and tried calling for a vet that works with birds but they don't see chickens. don't know how/where to get medical attention.

they were treated last week with wazine thinking they might have worms. i also did poultry dust for mites.

this is my favorite bird. i don't know what to do.

A picture would be worth a 1000 words here. Can you post one? Could it be prolapse? Try doing a search for prolapse, you will find info faster than anyone can post. Prolapse is when the insides come out. People reccomend quiet dark confined area. Use Prep H or honey and push the prolapse back inside. May need to repeat. Sorry I'm not more help. Good luck.

local vet is an issue since i live in detroit. they told me they could take a fecal sample and send it to michigan state univ for testing but they can't give me medical attention.

i called a vet in the metro area that treats birds but they don't do chickens.

how do i find a vet that will see chickens? i haven't tried a google search yet but will do that now.

if this is a boil it's a HUGE one. The swollen area was the size of my entire hand.

I had three hens die from the same type of thing. They became distempered after laying. My vet told me sometimes hens get infected after laying. He put it in laymens term.. He said sometimes a young calf will get sick and has dieareah after a while a part of the digestive track becomes exposed. That can become infected in a shot time. They get a high fever and can die. He said sometimes hens have a similar problem after laying.

I just had to put down one of my Red Stars yesterday..
I had noticed her going in the hen house early and not roosting on the pole. My wife picked her up and her entire bottom was a red bleeding mass. She smelled of rotten meat and even had a maggot on her feathers. I put her down right away.

To be clear in the past I have had this happen and tried to clean them up with preroxide... they still die within a few days.

When this happened to another hen we took her to th vet an he put her down right away as well... He said chickens and other types of foul hide can hide illnesss until it is nearly to late.
I could be totaly wrong in your case but if you can try to clean her bottom and keep her seperate.. I had one hen that did recover what I discribed above and she is just fine.

Good luck I hope she makes it.

here is a pic from an earlier post when the sore was smaller

this is all internal, inside her skin not sticking out so i don't think the prolapse information i read fits the situation.

i did look at her vent when i found this escalation this evening and it looked normal

i did clean their butts last week because i was thinking the problem was mites. i used water and some antibacterial soap (not knowing what else to try). then i did poultry dust.

the skin isn't broken. it is just stretched and sore looking. and there is alot of warmth like an infection

Ok scratch Prolapse. Next thought. Infected Oil Gland. They have an oil gland near the vent. I have added a link to a previous thread with a pix in post 7 I think.

I doubt it is a boil, at least not the people kind, People get zits and boils in the sweat glands and Hair Follicles. And as far as I know chickens don't have either. But it could be an infection in a chicken gland. Same difference I guess. You may want to try a warm bath ( for the chicken).
