"Lady, it's gonna kill you!" He hissed, taking a step back as she aggressively pushed him backwards.Zulema locked eyes with Theodore after they abruptly yanked her into the safety of cover from the sun. There was a glint of annoyance in her eyes that xe refused to do as she said. ‘What are you? A vampire?’ Taking a deep breath, she nodded her head. “Yes, yes I am, nowgetthehelloutofhere.” she spouted out, obnoxiously pushing him in the direction of the honeysuckle bush with a free hand while constantly keeping an eye out for the Reaper’s emergence from the ground.
Sounds of a disembodied deathly rattle echoed into the air, with no exact location to pinpoint.
You want to play hide and seek? I’ll play.
Giving Theodore one last shove, Zulema reached inside of her cloak and pulled out a marble sized object with a stem. “I’ve dealt with these things before. Now move.” she hissed, tossing the object onto the ground for it to supercharge and shake explosively in its firework nature. Now ignited, the cherry bomb sped off in wild, winding curves as it tracked down the Reaper.
Prepping her bow once more, Zulema turned away from Theodore and in a matter of seconds, her apparent figure stared to vanish from the head, down.
“See you.”
A rough fifteen minutes had passed before Zulema made her return to the bus. Other than suffering from the severe third degree burns on her hands, she was relatively unharmed. With the head she severed from the Reaper in tow and crossbow hurled over her shoulder, she passed through the surface of the honeysuckle bush with ease."Lady, it's gonna kill you!" He hissed, taking a step back as she aggressively pushed him backwards.
Both of them seemed to pause as the Reaper's death rattle snaked through the air. It caused xem to shiver, xyr clouded eyes locked on Zulema's face. Ears twitching slightly, they tried to pinpoint the Reaper's location in his minds eye.
It was like running into a brick wall, however, as he saw complete darkness. Dammit..
Theodore stared at the strange object she threw to the ground, taking several steps back as it shook and hissed, suddenly launching into the air and away from the vampire and seer.
"What is that th- oh my god, you're disappearing." Theo went wide-eyed, but not with fear as much as awe. "I didn't know vampires could be invisible!"
Theo, my dude. Not the time.
Right, right. What'd she say?
School bus. Honeysuckle bush.
Okay, alright, got it..
He turned to head towards the direction she has pointed in, but quickly paused. "Zulema?" They muttered to the empty air, glancing around.
"Don't die, alright vampire-lady?"
Xe frowned, turning back towards the location of the honeysuckle bush.
God's know you might be my only hope in whatever this place is. You seem to at least mostly know what you're doing.
"I couldn't tell you, actually," Spahgnum mused after thinking the prospect of sunlight deprivation over. "I have yet to become entrapped in a situation where I didn't have access to light."“Centuries” she murmured “interesting.” Cassie peered at him as a kind of faraway look drifted over his eyes, she shook her head and looked at her feet. It was hard not to ask rude and condescending questions when she wasn’t even sure how he came to be, for starters he walked and talked sorta like a human but Sphagnum wasn’t human. That was for certain.
He spoke about all the things which had an effect on him, whether that be fire or drought. Cassie tipped her head slightly to the side “what happens if there’s no sunshine only snow for days? Do you feel really weak?” She asked genuinely curious now.
He pulled his pack down off his head and pulled out a food bar, that’s when she remembered she had one too. Cassie spun frantically looking for it, she let out the breath she had been holding when she spotted it resting against the wall behind her. With her bow and quiver of arrows beside it.
“Oh, you will need-“ she broke off, he wouldn’t need it. He’d already said so. “Thanks” she said taking the food bar and turning so it was in her bag. “Do you have water? You might need it if you don’t. If you don’t you can share mine” she said feeling the distinct need to pay him back for the food bar.

She didn’t reply, she would feel awful if the tree creature keeled over dead because as much as part of her despised it another part of her wanted to cling to it because she knew it could be the only life form she ever got to see again."I couldn't tell you, actually," Spahgnum mused after thinking the prospect of sunlight deprivation over. "I have yet to become entrapped in a situation where I didn't have access to light."
"A situation such as this, I suppose."
At Cassie's insistence for Sphagnum to take the water container from her, he put up his enormous twig hands to fend her off. "Oh, do keep it." With that, he brought the bottle out of his own pack and passed it forward. "My roots source everything I need, I assure you."
There was an empty pause, and then, an unevenly intoned, "Thank you."
"...hope I did that right."
The accompanying fiendish grimace was definitely the crown jewel of the interaction.
Sphagnum turned its attention back into its own bag and drew out the remainder of its contents- an unassuming little tin. "Now whatever purpose do you suppose this serves? More nutrition?"
"What?" Zayne blinked, taken aback by their direct question. "Oh. Nothing, sorry. I guess I'm just a little on edge," he replied with an awkward chuckle, wiping his finger on his pant leg."Mhm." Xai hummed softly, fingertips dancing along the edge of a long, pale purple leaf as they walked. "It looks real, yes. It just feels... wrong."
They glanced behind them, raising a brow at Zayne's distressed expression. It paused, turning completely to face him. "What's wrong with you?" It muttered, clutching their bow.
Theo had found the entrance of the bus with ease, though having to duck slightly to get inside. It was.. pitch black inside the bus, honeysuckle leaves shrouding the windows, not allowing any light in. Well, that makes sense. Vampire. Do vampires not have lamps, though?A rough fifteen minutes had passed before Zulema made her return to the bus. Other than suffering from the severe third degree burns on her hands, she was relatively unharmed. With the head she severed from the Reaper in tow and crossbow hurled over her shoulder, she passed through the surface of the honeysuckle bush with ease.
Dealing with the Reapers was the only repercussion in living right on the edge of their territory, but the rarity of their loot was well worth it. Besides, Zulema would rather take her chances of living out in the Distant Lands than the Safe Zone itself. She had learned better to avoid certain swindlers, shops, and parts of the city ever since she woke up to her first quest there.
Stepping up into the bus through its conventional doors, she tossed the Reaper’s head into the drivers seat and scanned the front of bus in complete darkness, noticing the curtain that divided the other half of the bus was closed shut.
Did they not find the light switch?
With no sort of light source leaking in through the honeysuckle bush that completely swallowed up the rundown school bus, one that didn’t have any sort of night vision would not be able to navigate inside, especially with all the junk Zulema carelessly left around in the center aisle.
She yanked open the curtain and flicked on a switch that turned on all the lights strung around the ceiling. There she saw Theo holding a very sharp weapon with a faintly glowing blade way too close to his face. Her eyes went wide and stormed over to xem, “Don’t touch that—!” she exclaimed, slapping the weapon out of xyr left hand and sending it flying into one of the two couches she furnished the bus with. “..it’s cursed.” she finished with a murmur, wincing from the use of her burned hand for the sudden strike.
Recoiling her hand back to her side, Zulema tossed the crossbow into the metal desk with a loud ‘clang’. “Yeah.. thanks” she said with indifference shortly before yanking her cloak up and over her head, revealing her more comfortable gothic leather attire with complementary fishnet leggings. Fixing her fuschia colored bangs, she effortlessly dropped the cloak on the couch beside her. She plopped herself down on the couch and lifted one of the cushions to retrieve a small metallic cylindrical container. Unscrewing the cap, Zulema dabbed her fingers in the practically empty drum, only to retrieve the slivers of medicinal residue.Theo had found the entrance of the bus with ease, though having to duck slightly to get inside. It was.. pitch black inside the bus, honeysuckle leaves shrouding the windows, not allowing any light in. Well, that makes sense. Vampire. Do vampires not have lamps, though?
Whether she had some source of light or not, they didn't see it. He had to trust his own intuition that xe wouldn't run into anything, or hurt xyrself.
Needless to say, that didn't work out.
He quickly became aware the Zulema wasn't the most organized person, after their leg became the poor victim of some heavy box lying in the aisle. "Could've warned me there'd be no light," xe muttered, stumbling blindly until they crashed through a set of curtains.
Xe coughed, straightening up and brushing their clothes off. "Very graceful of you, Theo." He muttered. "She has to have a light in here somewhere.."
He felt along the side of the bus, shuffling along the floor cautiously. They missed the light switch by only a few inches. They did, however, bump into what felt like a desk.
Oh, maybe a lamp on the desk...
He felt around, until xyr hands fell on something cold, metal, and-
"Glowing!"
He picked it up, holding it closer to his face. Maybe it's a flashlight.. got a button somewhere?
Theodore did not become aware of the fact that it was not a flashlight, but a very strange looking knife, until he was briefly blinded by a light turning on. There was a sharp smack on his hand, and he no longer held the heavy metal blade.
Zulema's voice forced him to open his eyes against the light. "Cursed?"
Any sane person would be wary of an object deemed cursed, but it only intrigued Theo more. "What kind of curse? What does it do? Where did you get it-? And, oh hey, congrats on getting back alive! I was wondering if you were going to with that thing. Would've been a shame to not see your pretty face again." He grinned at her, before taking in the rest of the bus. "Interesting setup you've got here."
