No, I don’t feel bad about using references. But that is my trick. But I never use drawings, always photos, and idk how to convert that into a cute style. So my style is super realistic. I’m proud of it. View attachment 2542457
Mmmm, when I use refs I try to stick with real photos too, the less realistic look is from simplifying. Taking out things that aren't needed to communicate what it is you're looking at.
the rest of what's there can be communicated with coloring and shading. Basic outlines make it look more cartoony.

Study from references to get a feel for the form and defining lines, then, if you want to stylise it, you can simplify it or exaggerate it however you like.
