Table Scraps

With the heat & humidity lately, I've been freezing older fruit like grapes, blueberries, strawberries, etc. They love the fruit, and in it's frozen state, I think it helps cool them down.

Just remember that all chickens are different - They all like different things.

I've just started with my chickens and have found that they LOVE squash, carrots and olive oil. I put a clove of garlic into the mix just for the health factors. Not enough to change the taste of the eggs. I put everything into the food processor and let it go for a couple of minutes and it's done. No chopping or cooking! Some times I stir in some cottage cheese or yogurt.

And another thing on Mad Cow - aren't cows vegetarians by nature??? I could be wrong, but that's what I remember from our neighbor who had them. Grass eaters. Could be why their bodies were being poisoned?

Hi im new here, and i feed my ladies grated carrot in milk but they dont touch it for a couple of days untill the milk has virtually set solid and then they cant get enough. was thinking of giving them some tinned sweetcorn but thought i would check to see if it was ok to give them. any of your own views on tinned sweetcorn would be appreciated.

I am going to address the potato peel issue. Potato peels that are greenish in color are toxic. These are potatoes that have been exposed to the sun during growth and they develop some type of toxin. I have read that these are not healthy for humans, but we don't eat large enough amounts to cause a problem--still you should not eat greenish potato peels. I read that these are the ones to avoid feeding to chickens. I can't give you sources of where I read this, it was awhile ago.

ok my chickens eat chicken not all the time but they still get it and i see no harm in it. not like its there old pal they once knew. and the potato peels they get that too none of my chickens seem effected by this they are completely fine

The toxin is solanine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solanine
Peels
in moderation are fine but if that's ALL they eat then there's a big problem. The toxin will build up in the system if that's all they eat.

Ever wonder sometimes why that whatever you just ate with tomato sauce made you sick to your stomach? It's because too many part of the actual plants were processed along with the tomatoes.

so, when are my chicks old enough for table scraps? Right now the dog and cats are getting fat, and all these veggie peelings are going in the trash! I have 5 week old chicks (all kinds! lol) and they are feathered out and on to grower feed crumbles right now.
