Tacky coop & run contest ****Update: It's time to vote!!!!!***

mine is disqualified - a cat got in, probably via the 6 ft stepladder I left sitting next to the high opening between roof and side wall, just large enough for a cat. Minus one chicken. I am enjoying the post though, my backyard looks fairly tacky. And not green - I had some old lumber lying around years ago, but it rotted and was termite bait so it went to the curb. I had a bit of old lumber recycled from a job site, but not nearly enough to do the size run everyone on here told me I needed, so I've purchased a lot of wood.

This is while we were fixing the run fencing.

It's right next to my redneck garden

All opened up. Yep, that's my disabled chicken. She may go live with a new lady we're going to meet at POOPS.

Old dog house - free (was my FIL's)
5 rolls of 6' x 150' chicken wire - Free (given to us by my BIL)
tons of 2 x 4's - Free of craigslist
7 8' fence posts - about $14 (there were on sale for $1.97 ea)

A week ago Sunday, my dog killed 8 of my 11 chickens. the three that survived are a BO, a Gold laced Wynd. and something I still haven't figured out. The GLW was very injured after that attack, but was walking fine. Didn't limp or anything. How long can she just sit there? When I pick her up she doesn't squawk or anything like she's hurting. She'll preen herself and fluff in the dirt.

Is it possible to have a disabled chicken be happy? The only problem I see is the BO (which I'm beginning to think is a roo) He walks right on top of the GLW. will walk right on her head.

Awwww, poor baby. She is a survivor. I think it IS possible to have a disabled chicken be happy. Sounds like she is perfectly happy but just can't move around. I think that you will know when it's time to cull but it doesn't sound like it's time now. I'm the same as you. I go above and beyond as far as taking girl of my animals, including keeping them alive if they are not showing any signs of pain. I know that most people would say to cull her being as though she can't walk but I would have to disagree with those people. Sounds like you have a plan and that plan is working. I say that if she is happy, then let her be. You never know, one day she may wake up and start walking. What a miracle that will be? I'm crossing my fingers for her.

Have you thought about trying water therapy? I know it sounds weird but I have seen a lot of spinal injury's have wonderful success with water therapy. And From what I'v seen and read chicken's tend to love a warm bath and blow dry. Id fill the tub up with warm cozy water to the level that she can't reach the bottom and hold her you may have to mover her around to get her to use those leg's a bit but even if all she does is wiggle them a very little it will build muscle and keep blood flow going to her extremities thus assisting the healing process. Just an idea.

I had a young chicken (10 weeks or so) attacked by my neighbors dogs......my fault, she got through the fence somehow and into their yard, etc etc. She had lots of punctures and just kind of flopped around when she wanted to move. She did eventually get more mobile...I have a big long thread about it here.

She ended up getting killed by a racoon or possum. Sigh. But she would have otherwise survived her injuries from the dog attack.
