How would you write the genotyping for birchen and silver birchen? Please correct me if I am wrong notating anything here...I'm still trying to learn about this color and how to it relates to E or e.

(E^R/E^R) (s+/s+) = gold birchen

(E^R/E^R) (S/s+) = silver birchen carrying gold

(E^R/E^R) (S/S) = silver birchen

I'm really curious about the second one, because my silver birchen cochin roo mated with my gold birchen Serama and produced a silver birchen chick.

Stacey,

Males can have two sex linked genes. Males can be s+/s+ (gold) or S/s+ or S/S as you stated.

Females can only have one sex linked gene. Females are S/_ or s+/_. Males give their sex lnked genes to their daughters so they determine if the female is gold or silver.

Females will give their sex linked gene to their sons and fathers will give the other sex linked gene to their sons.

The male chicks from your cross will be split or heterozygous for silver or be S/s+. The females will be silver.

Hmm...I have an interesting development...

As you stated, I should be getting silver girls and either heterozygous or homozygous silver males.

I have ended up with a possible gold birchen male from a phenotype silver birchen male and a phenotype black female. Assuming the possibility that my hen may be E/E^R (or something else) s+/_, even that wouldn't give me a gold male. At best, I would get a few gold birchen females if the male were S/s+. Any ideas what could be happening here? Am I overlooking something? According to the Punnet squares, I shouldn't be getting any male gold anything.

I wouldn't question this if the little guy wasn't growing an impressive little buttercup comb (totally unexpected) and trying to crow already.

If it's any help, I've had two chicks come out with the down color that looks like a brown and white chipmunk pattern (as opposed to brown and yellow).

Photos of chicks I've found marked similar to these suggests that they may be silver laced or pencilled. The other chick has more white on the wings. What do you think? (I'm not certain, but I think I may have both a male and female.)

Actually, yes he's bantam, but he's not the daddy...of this one, anyway. He has produced a nice little silver partridge son and silver birchen daughter with my Serama. I can't wait to see what they look like grown.

The male could have been S/s+ and he would have effected the offspring. If this was the case, the male father may have had a modifier that removed any gold/red color.

Birchen is not always dominant so what you may getting is a heterozygous birchen and brown or wild type bird. The whiter down on the back is an indication of silver.

I'm not quite sure I explained myself clearly, and I think I may have confused you as to what I was asking. I was actually asking about two different colored chicks.

The one male chick is black with gold from the silver birchen father and black mother. I'm not sure what to make of his gold coloring, since he shouldn't have it. I'm guessing you were saying the father to the silver birchen roo was the one that had the modifier?

The two chicks...I thought that the white in the down might indicate silver, but wasn't sure. Thanks for clarifying that.
