Recently learned tailless chickens are a thing. He’s (assuming he) a CCL, which I read come from Araucanas. The other chicks he’s with have tails I can feel, he doesn’t. There’s just nothing there above his vent lol. Is this a tailless chicken or does that come later? He’s a week old.

How bizarre! I couldn’t figure out why he looked different for a while lol
Cute baby! :love

I'll be curious to see if it's just different growth rates.. indicative of boy verses girl in SOME breeds.. irrelevant in most others.. but not uncommon.. and also not *usually* rumplessness.

I have 2 leghorn currently going on 2 weeks showing the same thing seen in yours. The little tail is finally popping up on the second one.

Yes, I’m super curious to see what happens. I see and feel obvious tails on the rest, but when I feel him, he doesn’t even have a bone there above his vent. I feel his hip/leg bones, but there’s nothing there to form a tail that I feel at all. I’ll update in a week or so and see if there’s any change!

Ah, I was wondering about that.. if there was a way to detect (feel) the missing tail bone. (I thought you meant you coucldn't feel the feathers in your first post, sorry) I also wondered if the tail bone actually eliminated feathers or if they just hung differently.. the following link indicates it could go either way but that the SOP for most calls for no feathers. I found the descriptions of the different types of rumplesness very interesting, maybe you will also.. :)

That is interesting! I know both of his parents have normal tails, but am not sure if they’ve had other offspring. I can’t tell if he has tail feathers and just no vertebrae or not. I feel no vertebrae, and see no distinguishable tail feathers, but he’s only about 1.5 weeks old. His wing feathers are coming in nicely, and the other birds wing and tail feathers are coming in. It’s in interesting thing to watch develop! I’ll try to get a comparative picture, although I know it’s still super early.

Same age. Different breeds though, and I suspect different genders. But I have multiple breeds and all have some sort of tail start at this point that’s obvious.

Just wanted to update. Almost 3 weeks old now. Still no tail. He’s got quite the personality though! 🥰
