My husband came home and said he had seen some old friends of our today and they had some chickens they wanted to get rid of. Said they come with the Taj Mahal coop, outside egg collection, etc. I asked if he know what kind of chickens or how many, how big was the coop, etc. He said he didn't know but he had told them yes and that the coop would easily fit on the trailer. I said ok, can I keep the coop and give away the chickens?

So maybe by next week I'll be able to post pictures of what they are calling the Taj Mahal. Maybe it means they spent more money on it than they thought they would. Now, who would do a thing like that?

I would say that includes about 95% of us.

As the proud owner of a 10x16 shed to be transformed into a coop & breeding center, I'd say I represent those remarks

Ok, we went to get the coop today. By the way, it turned out it was for sale, not free, but none-the-less, I thought it was worth the $270 she was asking. There were ten chickens, one was broody in a pen inside the pen, 2 laying dominiques, 3 banty pullets, 3 banty hens and 1 banty rooster. It was very heavy, made with some kind of masonite siding or something. It was standing on legs about 4 feet tall made out of landscape timbers and cross=braced inadequately. The lady said to take the pen with the broody in it and when we started to move it she jumped off the nest and had about 6 brand new babies under her. So with two of DH's friends who went to help we managed to get the coop on the trailer and get it home. I also got a big plastic feeder, an aluminum hanging feeder a 2 gallon aluminum waterer A clamp on light with reflector, and two actual Brooder light reflectors with the big red bulbs and the "cages" around the bulbs, a bag of starter, one of grower, the small pen the broody is in and another double pen about 2x4 total made out of 1x2 welded wire. The coop has way too many nest boxes for its size, and no clean out door, but it has good ventilation and a lift-up section below the roof that you can close in the winter. All the windows (made from picture frames) also have latchable hardwire cloth frames under the glass part. So, there will be a bit of work I will need to do for it to fit in my plans, but I think it will be worth it. The first thing DH did was cut off the legs and put it on 2x6 skids so that it can be moved easier, and can be set up on cinderblocks. but will have to do that with a vehicle. This thing is heavy! So, anyway, I think it will start its life here as the isolation coop for the chickens until time to put them with the others or maybe find home for most of them. I will have to build a temporary pen for them, but it will give them a nice place for their quarantine.

Anyway, here's a picture, I think its about 4x8.

Fine looking coop.. I'm guessing the red doors are individual nest box doors to gather eggs?

Only thing I question is the waterproof-ness of the roof over the nest boxes.

Otherwise, looks peaches.
