Talk to me about laptop computers

I have an HP Pavilion dv5 (thanks Dad!!). I love it, and it's a pretty colour

That's important when buying any computer.

Before that I had a Sony Vaio K33, it got in a car wreck with me three weeks after I bought it. It was beaten all to hell, but worked great for four years.

Not sure how hardy this HP is, as I don't travel much with it anymore. Weight is fairly important if you're going to be carrying it around a lot. My Sony was my college laptop, and it must have weighed 8-10lbs. That's what happens when you take someone's advice about buying the biggest screen possible

Yeah, Win 98 is long gone. Dell is OK. I've done a lot of work with Dell
workstations and servers.

HP, which owns Compaq, has always been a good product to me. The
prices are very good too. I beat the snot out of my laptops and they
always come back for more.

Dell is okay but, I'm not as impressed with it as I was the compaq. I'm glad to here with the merger/buyout bit that the HP is good too.

we had our compaq for 6 years without a problem...but the compaq presario 2100 is known for having cooling fan issues ..just make sure if you are going to buy one used that it has not had an overheating problem which will shorten the processor life

I would stay away from the Dell brand. I had a dell brand laptop that would overheat and freeze etc. It came out that something was defective (in a lawsuit, i think), and dell did nothing to fix the problem.

Now, I have a Gateway FX, and I love it!

I probably won't ever buy another HP again. 1 month before my warranty expired it died, sent it back they then told me I had spilled liquid in it, NOT, asked them how they determined said spill they then told me I had damaged it somehow. NOT, I have been extremely careful with it. So I filed a complaint with BBB, they finally fixed it then, and went back to there was liquid damage even if I didn't do the spill it could have been moisture from the air. The air in Iowa in winter is dry. So if their workmanship is that bad I don't think I will shell another 800 bucks on one of their laptops.

Would like an imac someday. I do like the Vista program, I don't think it is that hard to use.
