    Hi fellow chicken lovers!

I have been reading BYC for a while and can't get enough. Finally joined the website a couple days ago. Sooo much great information and experience to learn from.

I have a mixed flock of 6 laying hens who my small kids named and adore. They free range in our yard (about 2/3 acre) and go to their coop to lay, and to sleep at night. Flock consists of (1) Deleware (Sparkle), (1) Barred Rock (Choo-Choo), (2) Rhode Island Reds - which according to what I read on the forums are most likely "Production Reds" (Cupcake and Carmel), and (2) Black Austrolrop (Mickey and Minnie). All about 1 year old.

This is the second flock of chickens we've owned (first flock of mostly BR's and Black Austo's were systematically wiped out by Raccoon) and my next project is try to breed some of the girls. After reading the forums on this website, it occurred to me that with a single RIR Rooster, I could theoretically get 3 different common chicken breeds: BSL (w/ Barred Rock Hen), RSL (w/ Deleware Hen) and RIR (with RIR hens). However, Instead of getting a mature RIR roo, I got (4) 3 week old chicks from a lady near me who was selling a bunch from a straight run, (1) barred rock (hoping to get another layer) and (3) RIR. I figure being from a straight, I had a very good chance of getting a roo. I can't tell my BR Chick gender yet. But out of 3 RIR's chicks, 1 is surely a rooster, and 1 is surely a pullet. The 3rd, I cannot tell.

I hope to post some pictures of the girls ( and new boy(s)) soon and can't wait to interact with you.

    Cheers!
