Tank Snails!!!! Arggg!

Quote:
Don't kill off all the beneficial bacteria in the rocks, that will likly make the tank unstable. I found that both my guppies and mollies did a great job at eating up snail eggs. If you know someone with a puffer fish, snails are their favorite meal, and I bet they'd be more than happy to take every last snail you could find from your tank.

Loaches will eat snails. Tho trumpet snails are tough because those shells close up tight! My yoyo loaches have been keeping them under control. Grab out as many as you can and crush 'em up to kill. Or as someone else suggested, give 'em to the chickens.

put a small piece of lettuce or cucumber in the tank, next morning it will be crawling in snails. remove promptly so the lettuce does not rot and mess up the tank cycle.

If you crush them up to kill, would those eggs from the snails float away and repopulate again?

Theres only a few fish left in there. I'm putting them in a different tank while this is being done. This tank has been up and running for over 5 years so some of the fish are pretty old. If I did have to put the rocks in hot water how long would it take the tank to get back to normal?

First in there I believe are:
2 glass cats
1 cory
1 x-ray tetra
1 guppy
1 damino or whatever you call it
and 2 hatchets

lol when i was a kid my grandmother got 2 of these tiny snails for free from petstore within a week she had millions did everything including a complete water change getting rid of all the gravel and going over tank with a wire cloth thought she got rid of all of them and in a week they where back.

You can put a piece of lettuce or other vegetable in the tank and in a few hours/over night you'll have a snail feeding frenzy. Then just take the leaf or veggie and toss. I used to just throw them outside. Something would always eat them! You can do this as often as you need to when you have excess snails.

I used to just crush their shells and feed them back to the fish. Seems kind of cruel now. I believe Channel cats will eat snails, but they may not be a good citizen in a lot of community tanks.

I either gather them up and take them out of the tank to crush them, or crush and let the fish eat them. Without the protection of the shell, the fish will eat snail, eggs, whatever is there.
