Tank Snails!!!! Arggg!

Quote:
funny you say that as I WISH my tank had them! lol We have parrot cichlids and they would love them to death lol lol

This is a funny topic - I have a friend that can't seem to keep the snails around - he likes that they eat the algae! In fact, he went to the aquarium store and got a few snails for his 2 tanks - 1 has a ciclid, and we think it ate the snails (can't find them), the other is a 55 gal tank with giant "feeder" goldfish. We can't find more than 1 or 2 snails in there, but there used to be several

Funny you should say that! There are aquarium forums where people are always asking for someone to send them snails!

I'd bet the cichlids ate the snails. They will eat just about anything that gets into the tank. I keep telling my cats they'd better watch out when they lean in to drink out of that tank! LOL

I'm serious if anyone wants some I can try to ship them this time of year lol just pm me about them! I still haven't cleaned the tank yet and I'm going to soon so let me know and i could send how ever many of these lil buggers you want!

There are products to specifically kill snails. The products contain copper which will not kill plants. A slight elevation of salt, as someone mentioned, will kill snails as well as plants.
The solution for the future is to quarantine plants and treat them for snails even if you can's see them, give the eggs time to hatch.

DO NOT use anti snail products in your tank if you also have shrimps, crayfish etc in there, the copper will kill them

also a large snail population is a sign that you're overfeeding. the snails are thriving on the leftover food. cut feeding down to a pinch of flakes twice a week (dont worry the fish wont starve) add in a piece of veg (lettuce cucumber or corgette seem to be favourites) before you go to bed. in the morning it will be covered in snails. remove the snail infested veg and throw away. repeat for a few nights and the snails will be nearly gone. feed the fish sparingly and the snails shouldnt thrive again!

Aloha,

I have those snails in my tank too. Here is a good way to get rid of those excess ones.

1) Feed them to the chickens, they are made of calcium and they are a form of protein too.
2) Purchase "Clown Loaches" these freshwater fish love eating snails. Natural predators that will eliminate them. Go to this link to read more http://hubpages.com/hub/Clown-Loaches look under "What do Clown Loaches Eat?" and snails are on the menu.
3) If you have "Red-eared sliders" (freshwater turtles) they will eat them up too.
4) Finally the "Anti-snail treatment" It is a liquid that kills them but may be harmful for the tank environment. ( I do not recommend this if you love your fish, I go natural predation)

I hope this helps....

I'm the same way. My mom had a fish tank and then one day I start seeing some snails appear and ask her if she bought them and she said no but thought one might of been in the bag with a fish she got. I loved watching them even though they kept producing more.

I'd be willing to take your snails depending upon the shipping cost. If you really want them gone you could be nice and pay the shipping cost.

My African Dwarf Frogs love them for some reason and it's nice to give them the variety instead of just blood worms. They might be a good controller for tanks with infestations.

Red Eared Slider Turtles are illegal in Oregon. They are an invasive species here and it will cost you big time if you are caught with one.

About the red ear sliders. I've had four females and they each got to about 10-11 inches long as adults. They lived in a heated pool and had a few land masses to get onto to sun themselves/dry out. Certainly cannot live in a 10 gallon tank.
