I have 10 California quail eggs in an incubator right now. They're expected to hatch on the 29th of June, however we rescued them after the mother abandoned them so we're not sure if that's exactly right. When we first brought them inside we candled them and saw a few cracks in the eggs, and could see them without the light of the flashlight as well. I've read that you put tape on the cracks to keep the membranes from drying up and to keep the embryo alive. I've already done so, but with the hatch date approching I was wondering if the tape should come off before they go into lockdown? Or would they be able to peck through it? We've already tried to peel the tape off of one just to see if it would come of easily and it didn't, it actually made the crack worse so I put the egg back in the incubator and haven't tried to since. If the tape must come off, any techniques I should use?

I haven't taped an egg yet, but I think if I were you I would leave it alone until they start hatching.
@Cyprus actually just had a taped egg that hatched. I'm not sure if she took the tape off or not though.

I took the tape off of my egg once it internally pipped.
I just moved very, very slowly and carefully. It took me a good long while.
