Tapeworm Deworming Questions

Moe what did you do?

Hi! I have read this thread from the top and I need help! I have 19 chickens and have had a tapeworm problem for months. I have done rounds of the Zimectrin Gold and the worms always come back. Separating the chickens is not an option since I have 19 of them and I a pretty sure all of them have it. So, since this is such a nasty infestation I am going to try agin and see if maybe this time works. It has been a few months since I have tried.

Just so I have it right - withdraw food for 24 hours. Give me all a pea size amount in their mouth. Give a little food but plenty of water the whole time. Then, do it all over again in 10 days? Can I do it again 10 days later if I still see the worms? I really am desperate to get rid of the worms because my chickens are looking thin. I have lost many nights of sleep over this!

Thank you for any guidance and help you can give me!
Your chickens must be eating insects that have eaten tapeworm eggs. An insect is the intermediate host for tapes and when a chicken eats the insect, the chicken is then infected. Trying to identify what insects are infected is almost impossible.
You can purchase valbazen and get the tapes cleared out in that manner or you can purchase another more potent equine wormer that eliminates tapes. Equimax equine paste wormer contains more praziquantel than zimectrin gold, costs about the same as z-gold. I've never used equimax, z-gold always worked for me. I would think a pea size amount of equimax paste should do the job. However, I'd try the valbazen first, it's safer.

Pretty sure it has never been studied in chickens- at least my research didn't yield anything. I used it on a relatively young (4month) chicken and it had no side effects that I could see. This was after 3 rounds of valbazen failed- the zimectrin gold wiped it out in 24 hrs. I am sure the risk depends on the current health of your chicken now. The dosing is a little tricky considering the tube it comes in- I put some in a smaller syringe so I could better quantify the amount I was giving (I did bb size with my 4 mon chicken and between bb and pea - lets say "caper" size for my year olds).

Good luck, let us know if it works for you!

This is why I like to know how many mg/kg of medicine to give. My next experiment is to figure this out for the different tubes of ivermectin/praziquantil.

Hi all - thanks for asking and again, for all the information! I took the food away for 24 hours and then wormed all 19 with the Z Gold and was able to get a pea amount size in each chicken. My chickens are pretty docile so it wasn't hard at all for me to get the meds in their mouths. After about an hour or two, I saw a couple of the chickens poop out a big old long tapeworm! YEAH! But listen to this.... the others saw the worms and tried to eat them! I ran in there and tried to get the worms from them (I know, GROSS) and managed to scoop up most of them with my shovel. Others may have pooped a worm but it may have been eaten. Is this normal? The worm was dead, but still, did they just reinfect themselves? I almost threw up when I realized what happened. I plan on doing it again in 10 days because it clearly worked this time around.

My chickens do not free range so I'm not sure what kind of bugs they eat. They have a coop and then a large fenced outdoor area to roam. There are a ton of wild birds around (crows, sparrows, hawks, etc) and I even find a sparrow or two stuck in theri coop from time to time. There are also mice and stuff that run around so I'm sure they are getting it from all these critters somehow. I have not seen any fleas and even my dogs don't have fleas. My guess is I will never know how they got it. If they keep getting it.. I will be at a loss of what to do!!

Thanks again for all your help and responses. And keep your fingers crossed for me!
