taxing on homegrown food????

Well, as much as I am opposed to censoring anything, I suppose the purpose of this forum was to share information about chickens. There are other forums on the internet that debate laws, taxes, politics, etc. So, the mods want to stay politic neutral, I have respect for that.

As far as possible taxes on food, even non-existent now, can still appear in the future. HOA's already doing it - fines on unapproved vegetation, etc. So when such taxes will become reality - who imposed them? Someone we voted for the local government. (Or did not bother showing up to vote).

I haven't been able to verify it, but I have heard 'rumors' from quite a few sources that the government is working on making it illegal to grow vegetable gardens at home--they say it is because it is unsafe for us to eat foods that are not USDA regulated, because we could get sick from it. Last I checked, whenever you see a food poisoning outbreak from produce...it was USDA regulated produce. Just my observation on that one...I don't know of any truth to this 'law', but it's frightening to think about. Government controlled food supply, anyone?

If you want to get scared about agricultural legislation, read up on NAIS. It would require every individual 'livestock' (They have a list of what animals qualify for this) animal to have an RFID microchip installed in it, which would allow its location to be tracked via GPS/satellite by the government. Also, if they saw animals on your property but could not get a reading on their chips, they would be able to take those animals from you and possibly take legal action against you for owning unchipped animals. It's having a hard time getting started, fortunately, but it is being pushed. Animals would have to be chipped even if they were only pets--many livestock animals are common pets--chickens, horses, pot-bellied pigs, pygmy goats...all would have to be monitored by the government 'to prevent bio-terrorism'. I haven't seen any other reason for this program than that, but for it to be effective, every animal in the WORLD would need to be chipped. Also, the cost of doing it is very prohibitive for small farmers; I read an article with a quote from a small livestock auction yard saying it would cost them in the neighborhood of $75,000 to get the equipment to be able to read these chips! If you really look into it, it's interesting to note who is funding/promoting this program. There's Cargill seed (it's right up there with Monsanto on getting everything patented!), the American Pork Producers Council (or something like that, I don't know their exact name)...all big corporations who will benefit by pushing down the small farmers out there.

Hello peeple, again. This is a link that MIGHT answer some questions you have on the taxing of food. OR the fines one may get in the future for growing a food without "someones" permission. As I said way earlier that Monsanto has a big hand in it. About how they are trying to "patent" certain foods, if not all of them. This is a 10 part you tube deal, but there is a DVD in it's entirty. Just type in "The World According To Monsanto" Check rhis out,,,,,,,,,http://www.twilightearth.com/2009/05/the-world-according-to-monsanto-full-documentary/

one of the reason that the possibility of taxing backyard gardens came up was because of people who decided that the taxes imposed on tobacco was getting too high for them. they started to grow it themselves and tried to cut out the profits to the tobacco industry & government, and to grow only what they needed for themselves without selling it off to others.

it was a push from the the big agri-businesses last year since they believed they were getting competition that was circumventing laws. same as the NAIS crud they had been trying to push on us.

with the stuff going on with 'food safety' and the FDA they want to regulate everything that you try to put into your mouth. (with the exception of 'supplements')

edit (meant NASI not NPIP)

Well, maybe not a FUNNY post, but a good one nonetheless...
