Teach me on Olive Eggers

I’ve beeen trying to learn more on Olive Eggers and I’m probably getting one next weekend! Do you have olive Eggers? How many eggs a week do they lay (on average)? Are they sweet breeds in general? Or not so much? I’m a little too obsessed maybe.

I had a black Olive Egger from Cackle Hatchery. I ordered 15 straight run olive egger chicks and only 1 survived the shipment.. She was a F1 generation. Her egg color was dark green. She was very sweet and loved to be petted, held, cuddled, and attention. She was the lowest in the pecking order too.

Olive Eggers aren't really a breed. And there are several crosses that can be used to develop an Olive Egger line. There is no way to really predict anything when it comes to such mixes. Even the egg color is not guaranteed. Things don't always inherit the way a breeder intends them too. It is entirely possible to get a blue layer or even a brown layer, depending on how many generations down the line the bird is.

I have an OE. Mine in particular isn't really friendly and she sometimes harasses her flock mates. She never causes any damage though. She is around 7-8 months old and I haven't gotten any eggs yet. You asked if they were a friendly "breed" and I wanted to clarify that reallt they aren't a breed at all. They are simply a cross between a dark brown layer and a blue layer to get a dark green egg. There can be several looks and personalities to them depending on breeds used in creating your OE. Mine is a marans (dark layer) x Ameraucana (blue layer). Often times you'll see F1 or F2 accompanying the birds description and that indicates whether the bird is a first generation OE (F1) or second generation OE (F2). Typically better olive colored eggs are expected with F2. Besides marans and Ameraucana, I've heard of people using welsummers, crested legbars, & icebars to get OE. Good luck with yours. Hope she works out well for you!

Yeah we just don’t really know what to expect in this bird but we do understand she is a cross breed. The hatchery told us Americauna and Maran. Thank you and good luck to her egg-laying!
