TeaChick's Chicks

I moved Snoodle into the juvenile pen/ temporary coop for the brood flock last night. I'll probably have to put her in there tonight too. I just hope that the other hens of the original flock don't follow her this time. I'm putting her in there late this time; putting her in the new hen house as soon as she roosted was how I got all the chickens sleeping in there.

I put a nursery pot in the corner of the brood flock's temporary coop. (I'm housing them in the juvenile pen until I can build them their own coop, which I hope will be soon, but I have tons to do and no extra building supplies at the moment.) I plan on putting a display box I got from Sam's in there too; I'll put it in a different corner in case there's anything about the nursery pot they don't like. I'm expecting both Snoodle and Marigold to start laying fairly soon. I hope they haven't started laying somewhere else already!!!

I also hope that they both go broody for me!!!

Chocolate still will not roost in the hen house, since the incident with Will I Am. IDK why; I can only assume that it was that traumatic for her. I've been putting her in the brooder (except one night I got her in the hen house with food and last night I forgot).
I've been thinking about incorporating her into the brood flock as well, b/c she sleeps where she lays, on blankets on my back porch.

What's wrong with the nesting boxes, silly chicken???? Although, she started laying there the same day as the Will I Am incident, as well as starting to sleep there; further increasing my suspicion that whatever happened was traumatic for her somehow.
I won't do that right away. I just started putting Snoodle in there. I'd want to wait a week after Snoodle starts going in there on her own. (Worst case scenerio, I'll have to put her in there when my Comet eggs hatch, b/c I'm going to need the brooder for them.)

We'll see.
Egg count has been good; five or more almost every day. =)
I'm leaving eggs in the nesting boxes to see if any of my Comets will go broody. Again, we'll see.

Take care, you all!!!

I candled the dozen Leghorn eggs tonight. They look like about 2 1/2 days. So, I'll lock them down on the 21st and expect them to hatch about the 23rd or so. I'll base lock down on a later candling. Meanwhile....

I'll be candling the Comet eggs probably day after tomorrow in the evening. I'll use the pics on https://www.backyardchickens.com/newsearch?search=egg+candling+pics that thread, and I'll base lockdown on how much of the shell they're taking up.

I'm guessing around the 10th or 11th, but we'll see.

I'm getting eggs right along.
Chocolate is going into the hen house to sleep.
Snoodle is too still, so I took her out of there again tonight and put her in with Marigold and Picard.

I'm unsure of whether Snoodle is laying. I checked her vent a month or so ago and it was a dry, tight, horizontal slit. I checked it again this morning (b/c I got a slightly smaller egg of unusually yellow-ish brown color on the second in the hen house nesting box) and it opened and rounded kind of and inside was moist. I can only assume that the difference means she's laying; I only hope that was her egg in the nesting box and that she's not laying somewhere else!!!
I'm split on what to do with her. IDK whether it's better to keep putting her into the juvenile pen (turned temporary coop) with Picard and Marigold or, since I have to retrieve her from the hen house every night anyway, I could just as well put her in the brooder until she lays me an egg (or for a reasonable amount of time to see she's not laying). Advice? Suggestions? Help?

I've got to go. I have a headache, so I'm making an early night of it. =)

Maybe you can help her with Snoodle then. I don't understand what she's trying to do with her.

Hope you're feeling better in the AM.....

I need all the help i can get: plus, everything I talk about on her is a work in progress that is subject to the cooperation (or lack thereof) of my chickens. lol
With Snoodle: I want to incorporate her in with the new chickens to create a brood flock (b/c those two hens are nice and are likely to go broody).
I can't do anything else with her (I wanted to find out whether she's laying or not), b/c I need my brooder for chicks that a friend of mine is hatching for me.

On a side note: I need to find out from her when they're due.
(I've gotten all messed up on dates and stuff this month; things are hectic around here right now, but that's how winter is here. ugh)

I did feel better this morning.

Well I'm here. How've ya been?
=)
Thank you.

Purty good. =)
How about you?
I've been busy and I've got me some eggs a-hatchin'. Two batches.
Okay, that's enough of that kind of speaking.
I'm expecting one batch around Valentine's Day and the other around (after, really) the 21st; I'll know more precise dates when I candle later in the incubation.
Otherwise, just trying to keep up with my studies (the operative word being trying).

I got one lesson done in philosophy. Now I've got to get two lessons done in English, and I'm only about half done with the first. =(

What have you been up to?
I'll check out your thread asap! =)
