I like to spend time every day sitting with my flock just watching them. My black Silkie, Pepper, was busy taking care of 8 one-day old chicks she had hatched for a friend whose hens would not sit. Pepper was trying to get the babies to venture outside and they each stood at the coop opening taking turns going down the ramp while Pepper stayed at the bottom of the ramp encouraging them to walk on down to her.

All the chicks were brave little fluffs of fur but one little guy. He stayed at the open doorway and would start to come out then back up. He did this several times and momma Pepper was about to get her feathers REALLY ruffled. She kept squawking at him for quite some time but he wouldn't budge. Pepper had finally had it! She marched right up that ramp and stood in front of the chick. She squawked a few orders, turned her back on the chick and he hopped right up onto her back! She carried him down the ramp and I never saw him disobey momma again! I wish I had brought my camera with me. It was really fun to watch.

I can just picture this happening as I read your story. It must have been priceless. I guess this is kind of what I mean when I say keeping chickens bring peace to your life. Thank you for sharing, it brought a big smile to my face.
