Teaching a Rooster.

Good Idea. Can you show me some pictures of you "cock box"? I will need some ideas. I only have one rooster but plan on getting a Maran rooster soon ( I hope ). My coop is really hot in the summer and I'm in Australia so even Winters are not to cold where I am. The only problem will be the hot night but luckily were going into winter here, so should be good.
How many hens do you have?

Ours is built into the coop - it's an area underneath the nesting boxes with a little door. It's about 12 inches high, 15 inches wide, and I think about 2 1/2 feet long- enough for 3 of them to walk around a little but not enough to stretch out and crow. It's meant only for sleeping. We drilled holes in the walls that are inside the coop (for lots of ventilation) but not the outside walls. It stays fairly dark in there as the coop is somewhat dark, so the box is even darker. We put them in around 8p.m. - they let us take them off the roosts and place them in their box. Then I let them out again around 8a.m. They do not crow until I let them out at 8.
However, in the summer, I am afraid they would not get enough ventilation so we will probably bring them in the house (or a cool garage would be good) - people who do that also use a box with drilled holes or a container with a wire lid - the important thing is to keep it dark. Some people say that darkness helps, others don't. Some people say that the low "roof" helps so they can't stretch and crow, others don't. So far, using both in our case is working fine.
Also, I only have 5 hens at the moment but we are adding about 10-12 more soon, as we want to keep all 3 roos and we definitely need more hens to do so.

gg, ask the Araucana thread they really wont mind. I have made some mutt Langshans and shared them with the Langshan thread and they loved them so you won't get a negative response. Also there are many threads of EE's!

I did, I was afraid I would get tarred and feathered! But my curiousity got the best of me so I went ahead and posted it. They did not mind and replied with not sure what it would look like, but I would get some tailed and some rumpless birds.

Oh yeah it's always 50/50 with everything you will also probably get half that lay blue eggs and half that lay a nice brown.

On the rooster crowing question, I use a rooster box too. I've just sorta put a door on a nesting box and put in some of those little food and water dishes that screw into the wall. I don't put him in there all night though. He and my hen are so close I don't like separating them for too long. I just get up before he crows and put him in the box so neighbors can sleep. I usually go back to sleep for an hour or so.. This might round silly but I've found when he's too noisy during the day, a radio helps :)

That's another vote for a box, I will get onto it right away!
I have also heard that roosters won't crow when a radio is on, you just set the radio to like the six am news or something and he wont crow!?!?!

Yeah, sometimes he seems calmed by it, other times confused and some sounds he seems to take as a challenge and crows at it but id say it works about seventy five percent of the time :)

I have an old battery powered radio, see if it works out.
My rooster since being in the new coop hasn't crowed once ( touch wood ).
But this is all good stuff for planning.
