Cool! I'd love to see a picture of her. I had a hen named Bella because it meant Beautiful too. I bet your Bella is very pretty. :love
 
It's been awhile since I've posted on this thread, as I don't really have anything new to post. I've been hoping that I could post about Amber finally growing her feathers back, but unfortunately, I haven't been able to stop my feather pluckers despite my attempts. Today, though this is not feather growth related, something happened with Amber that I'd like to share.

Many, including myself, look at crossbeaks as one who won't be able to defend themselves well, if at all. We usually expect them to be the bottom of the pecking order and some people keep them in very small flocks because of that. Earlier today, Amber proved that differently, at least for herself, anyways, that she could defend herself just fine. Here's the story of what happened:

Tweety IV, an Isa Brown hen, has been getting a little full of herself. She's been picking fights with many of her flock mates, including those who are bigger and older than her, and has been winning against them. She was out free ranging earlier by a picnic table where my flock had been getting spoiled. Amber came over, a little late to the party, and was looking for any leftovers. Tweety saw her and began challenging her.

The two hens fought for a couple of minutes with Tweety fighting nasty by pulling on Amber's shoulder feathers and flapping at her. Amber ignored Tweety's aggression and refused to back down like the other hens that Tweety has defeated. Amber used her endurance and finally defeated Tweety and chased her to Beth II, the second-in-command of the flock. Beth, being who she was, and not one to put up with troublesome birds, took over while Amber watched and attacked Tweety and finished chasing her off.

I was very surprised by Amber's victory and now I know that she's doing just fine with her pecking order. :)

She's doing good! I just did her beak this morning. I don't wrap her up while her beak is being done anymore because she sits so well, but I almost wrapped her up this time. She was being a little difficult when I first started on her beak, but thankfully she settled down so I didn't have to wrap her up. :)

Unfortunately, I haven't been taking any pictures of her lately. I'm currently battling a bad plucking issue in the flock, and unfortunately, Amber is one of the ones that look the worst. I'm hoping she'll go in a hard molt so I can separate her, or at least start growing the lost feathers together.

I thought it was cool how they were both drinking together as my two crossbeaks, Amber with the severe crossbeak and Beatrix with the unnoticeable hairline crossbeak.
