Teenager refuses to kill her chicken for a class project

What does the description of the class say where she signed up for the class. I bet it was the same as what she got at the beginning of the semester. I know we got a good description of all the classes an got to ask lots of questions before we signed op for any classes. I bet she didn't try to change classes at the beginning of the semester anyway.

Local HS just dissected a cat this week. Just port of HS. No note home for that as far as I know.

If my kid signed up for a class with that description I would have thought that they would be starting a garden or something. I would never give my kid permission to do that at school. If they wanted to do it, it would be with me, in an environment I am in control of and in a way I approve of.

I personally feel that teaching your children about raising your own food and processing animals raised for that purpose should come from home. You cannot learn what you need to about being self sufficient in 60 minutes 5 days a week for 3 months. I also feel that taxpayers money toward education should teach our children reading, writing, math, basic science, budgeting, music, art, etc., not how to be an animal farmer.

In the news clip they mentioned the name of the class was "Livestock and Poultry Production". Even if I didn't expect actual slaughter in the classroom, I would at least expect some graphic depictions of the slaughter process.

What the school should have done was made the project optional and extracurricular. That way the birds could have been raised on the side of class and slaughtered after school or on a weekend. I also don't believe it was right to include this portion of the class as part of a grade because I can imagine many kids would actually have a problem with killing an animal. Heck, even though I believe there's nothing wrong with humane slaughter, I think I will have a difficult time when I have to kill the turkeys I'm planning to get over the summer.

I cried when I read what she wrote. Amazing.

I know I would've done the same thing too. I would not have killed him.

I would never dissect a cat either! Thank God it was not required at my high school. I just did not take that class.

"Animal Science and Food Production" in no way implies to me that my kid would be slaughtering an animal in school. It's possible to learn about it without doing it.

Yeah, last year we had two BBW's - Thanksgiving and Christmas. Come processing time, Ken couldn't do it, so we lined up someone to do it. Ken changed his mind again. No homegrown birds for us!
