Tell me about your chickens!!

I'm in the mid Willamette-Valley Oregon, and while we don't get quite as much rain as you we still get LOTS of rain. I have had cochins and silkie in the past and they get soooo muddy. There feet feathers get really messed up and can be difficult to clean up for showing. I would recommend getting clean-legged breeds, or make sure your run is covered so it doesn't get really muddy. Also choose a location for coop/run that has good drainage.

I don't have a lot of advice here, but I just moved back to AK from Sequim almost 2 years ago . . . This is our first year with chickens and I LOVE ours. We have a few silkies (the white roo is my personal favorite) and my daughter is (hopefully) going to be showing 1 or two of them next year for 4-H. We decided on a Silkie because they are relatively small and docile - I figure they'll be the easiest for her to handle. I love our silver laced wyandottes and all 8 of our Orps (buff, blue, black and splash), too . . . I'm probably not helping a whole lot - I think I was just excited to see someone from close to (my second) home!!!

So you left Sequim about the same time we did. We lived on Carlsborg Rd next store to the Ice Cream Shop. Sequim getting to big for you too?

I plan on having the run area raised up to allow for good run off. I also plan on having roof on the run with gutters. I want to keep as much water away from the run and coop as possible.

You all are making some really good pros and cons. This is so helpful, thank you!!

I know, right! But I'm not a duck fan. I wouldn't mind geese, but that would have to wait until we get more land, or wait for the lady across the street to die. Sounds horrid I know but she hates geese and how "noisie" they are. Guy down the road had one and she was ready to run the thing over with her car. I love their chatter, I think its great.
But we just love chickens!
